Sayra and her first day at CEIP Virgen de Barbaño

Empty Desk Loneliness

It was the first day of school at CEIP Virgen de Barbaño for Sayra, a 9-year-old girl who was moving to Montijo from a small village. With her new backpack and her ponytail still impeccable, she entered the noisy playground.

The first few hours were a whirlwind of rushed introductions and classroom placements. Sayra could barely utter a word. The morning went by without incident, but when lunchtime came, she was left alone.

While her classmates gathered in lively groups, looking for free tables amidst laughter and jokes, Sayra sat alone in a corner of the playground, with her lunch box untouched. Her shyness turned into a knot in her throat.

The following days were no better. Sayra felt very lonely. She watched from her desk as her classmates formed study groups, shared conversations, and made weekend plans. She, on the other hand, went home at two o'clock with the same feeling of isolation.

Social exclusion began to affect her academic performance. She couldn't concentrate, unable to understand the explanations of her teacher, Mr. Juan Antonio, as her mind clouded over with thoughts of sadness and loneliness.

One day, while browsing the school library, Sayra came across a brochure about the "Mediators" program. The program aimed to pair new students with older ones to help them integrate into school life. A spark of hope ignited within her.

Upon signing up for the program, Sayra was assigned to Natalia, a friendly and kind girl who welcomed her enthusiastically. Natalia guided her through the school corridors, introduced her to her friends Roberto, Karla, Javier..., and encouraged her to participate in fun activities. Little by little, Sayra came out of her shell.

The smiles that were once timid turned into open laughter. The awkward silences were filled with lively conversations. The loneliness of the empty desk gave way to the warmth of friendship and belonging.

Sayra's experience showed the need to create a more inclusive school environment. The school could implement some measures to achieve this, such as:

Mediator Programs: Pair new students with older ones to facilitate their integration.

Fun activities: Offer a wide range of activities so that all students can find a group to identify with and play with.

Awareness workshops: Provide students with tools to recognize and combat social exclusion.

Awareness campaigns: Promote a culture of respect and inclusion throughout the school.

Sayra's story reminds us that social exclusion can have a negative impact on a student's life. It is the school's responsibility to create an environment where all students feel welcome, valued, and have the same opportunities to reach their full potential. Only then can we build a vibrant, diverse school community where learning flourishes in an atmosphere of respect and empathy.
