A volcano looks like a mountain but is much different on the inside. Deep, deep, deep underground there is the Mantle, and the deep magma chamber. These 2 places "holds" the lava deep underground. Then just a little bit higher is the upper magma chamber, it is just a little closer to the bottom of the volcano, this also "holds" the magma but just a little closer to the volcano.

The last volcano to erupt was in Hawaii. The volcano is know as the Kilauea volcano. As you may think "oh, theres always a volcano erupting in Hawaii, thats not surprising. It's probably only on of those shield volcanoes" well, what if i told you, NO. Well, sorta. It wasn't exactly a shield volcano, but sorta. It was in the shape of a cone but had slow lava like a shield volcano (not quite as slow, but still slow.) Kilauea's frequent eruptions are usually nonexplosive and are contained within Halema'uma'u as a boiling lake of active lava, which sometimes rises and overflows along the floor and flanks of the caldera proper.

When magma rises from deep inside the earth and breaks through the earths crust. Normally this happens when a piece of the earth's crust gets weakened by recent shifting of Techtonic plates or when a recent earth quake has occurred. When magma bursts out of a volcano it becomes lava. But when the magma is still in the volcano the pressure builds up more and more. The pressure builds over time by little bubbles of air going to the exit of the volcano. When the pressure is too much the top explodes and once the lava cools down again the exit will be blocked again for a few hundred years.
