I had a mentor for my first two years of teaching. The relationship consisted of weekly meetings my first year, and then once a month check-ins my second year. While it was helpful the first year learning to navigate things specific to our school like technology, schedules, and grading systems, it was not very helpful when it came to instructional growth. She did not have experience in my subject, and whenever I came to her with concerns about behaviors, I did not receive much help beyond "You're doing great. Just keep going." I know I would have benefitted much more having someone who had taught my subject area before and having someone who observed me more often and really helped me problem solve and try new strategies.
