Write a sentence or two responding to one of the following questions: What have your peer review experiences been like? When peer review is good, what's happening? When peer review is bad, what's happening? If you've never done peer review, or haven't done it in a while, what do you think of the idea of peer review?

I haven't done a peer review, so this one would technically be my first one. What I think that it's gonna be like is that we will be able to get more information from another person on how to better the essay that we are doing. Pretty much picking at every tooth making sure that everything is almost perfect.

I have done peer review in the past and I didn't like it. Still don't like it. There is absolutely nothing against my classmates, I am just worried about someone else reading what I put my thought and heart into. Even if it is just a school assignment I still put my own thoughts and energy into it, so I don't sound like a robot.
-Cassondra Gomez

My experience with peer reviews is mixed. Sometimes my work would be reviewed by excellent classmates that offered constructive advice and didn't put me down for any mistakes I made. However, I've also had bad experiences where the reviewer jeers and tells their seat partner(s) about mistakes I've made. And at the end, they don't even offer helpful suggestions. They talk about my stylistic choices rather than the substance of the assignment.
- Maria Rivera

I last participated in a peer review during my freshman year of high school in 2004. If I remember correctly, the anticipation was more painful than the physical experience. Stronger writers were gentle with their criticism. Weaker writers were generous with their compliments. Regarding the one for this class, I have no qualms. I welcome the fresh perspective and constructive feedback on an otherwise tired and humble narrative.
-Vivian Smith

In high school i did a of peer review and i really didn't like it. Its hard to give help to someone who might seem as a better writer than you are and its also didn't really help a lot because most wouldn't tell me what to change they kind of just didn't want to talk about it. I don't mind getting help from others but i do have trouble giving criticism to others.
-Edgar Hernandez

In high school we were required to peer edit all the time. I honestly was a fan of peer editing because, you get the opinion or get to give the opinion on a story and help each other with your writing. It shows a different perspective in your writing and shows what you can improve on. When peer review is poor you can usually tell because the notes will be small or not really make sense.
-Max Flame

Everyone seemed to know what they were doing, it was at times hard to give advice. Although I felt for me it was helpful when people did give me there thoughts. Sometimes they just wouldn't read it and said it was good.
-Stephanie Martinez

Peer reviews have been different every time I have done them. The review depends on the person who is reviewing it because there is a chance they don't care and won't put effort into the review. Also, I have had reviews where they peer is way over editing and they basically change the paper. The last encounter would be someone trying to review the paper and they are nicely trying to criticize the paper and they can't get their point across.

When peer review is good, they are offering constructive criticism. They are providing clear feedback without being disrespectful. Not only do they point out areas that could use help, they also indicate some helpful suggestions on how to do so. Another great was to provide peer review is to point out portions of the text that are appealing to provide reassurance to the writer on areas that are written well.
-Katie Lovato

I am a little anxious about giving suggestions on another student's writing, because I want to be kind and honest but I don't have a ton of confidence in my own knowledge yet. I am looking forwarding to receiving constructive criticism, though. It's helpful to have an outside opinion.
