The virus can spread easily through body fluids of an infected person, such as saliva, urine, blood, semen and breastmilk and sexual contact. Additionally, this infection can be caused by bone marrow or organ transplantations. CMV is one of the most common infections which cause defects during fetal development. Cytomegalovirus breaks down the cytoskeletons of the host cell leading to an enlarged cell and then damages the cell.
