From this description of them being physically distant we can expect that he wants to end things with her because he doesn't feel a connection.
-Shortly after the silence, he admits to Marjorie that the love isn't fun. While having this talk "Nick sat there, his head in his hands". Sitting there covering his face shows that he might be feeling ashamed of how he feels.
-After Nick breaks up with Marjorie, he feels remorseful. “He lay there for a long time. He lay there while he heard Bill come into the clearing walking around through the woods." Even when bill comes he still lays there which shows he's having a hard time moving on from that.
