From 1911, artists used his smiling face and benevolent attitude in numerous paintings.
His head and torso became artistic drawings that were freely displayed on boxes of morning cereals Cream of Wheat.

His father was a chemist in the perfume industry, and his mother's family owned orchards. The artist lost his father in 1894, and moved to Newark, NJ, where he met his future wife. They got married in 1903 and had eight children. Enoch Bolles studied Art. His first assignments occured in 1914 on the covers of magazines. He established a significant reputation for his distinctive cover paintings for a series of magazines, especially ''pin up'' work. He was also a versatile illustrator who created advertising for Sun-Maid Raisins, Vicks VapoRub, and Zippo lighters.
Due to overwork and malnutrition, Bolles suffered a mental collapse in 1938, which ended his career. Due to paranoia, Bolles entered a mental institution, where he remained for most of his life. He eventually recovered enough to paint impressive landscapes and portraits of hospital workers, family and friends. He had access to a small art studio in the hospital, from which he even painted several pin-up magazine covers that were sold and published during the 1940s. Enoch Bolles left the Hospital in 1969 and spent the last seven years of his life at his family home in NJ, where he died aged 93 in 1976. © David Saunders 2009

Nicholas, his father, was a portrait painter and Adrian, one of his brothers, became a landscape painter.
Edward was also a painter, first working on commission. Later, he got a job as a painter for ads and worked to order for 15 years. He created weekly ads for his company's major client, Cream of Wheat. For this assignment, he invented the character Rastus, making a three dimensional portrait from which he positioned his character in various angles and facial positions.
He is credited with 102 ads for Cream of Wheat.

In 1900, he was working as a chef in a Chicago restaurant when he was photographed in his everyday kitchen uniform.
His face appeared for decades on a box of breakfast cereals called Cream of Wheat. The brand belongs to Nabisco now, and the cereals are still popular.
The black chef's face became so iconic it was not easy to attribute it to a real man.
However, the true identity could be matched with the name of Frank L. White, since the man is said to have told several people in his neighborhood that he was "the man on the box''.
It took 69 years after his death in 1938 before serious investigation made it possible to reunite White's name and the photograph of the man on the box.
His humble grave in Leslie, Illinois, was rebuilt to solid to honor his memory. It now properly displays a stone engraved with a name, and bears a photograph.
