In Jamaica, Barbados and Leeward Island, the sugar planters first started practicing slavery in large amounts with no laws to govern the sugar plantation industry of the enslaved at that time. The African then had no rights but was seen as property of value to the plantation owners. The Spanish colonist at that time main focus was accumulating wealth through cultivation of sugar by enslaving the West African people. The conditions of the Middle Passage were appalling. The slavers were usually overcrowded and this led to unsanitary conditions, resulting in the outbreak of various diseases, including small pox and dysentery. Many Africans died as a result of these contagious diseases and others died from inhumane treatment (The Slavery Experience, 2012). This replicates the notorious crime that contemporary civilisations are experiencing called Human Trafficking. . Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs. In society today, human traffickers do the same for example, painting a picture of paradise in another country with an incredible job offer to their victims. In other cases, they will conduct planned captivity of their victims, for example the drugging of women for sexual exploitation and shipment. They then receive large sums of money or trade for this inhumane act. The aristocrats in the first world countries still depend heavily on modern slavery, infringing the human rights and dignity of many. This silent crime has left many Caribbean families paralyzed for life, in hurt searching for their love ones that never showed up. Human Trafficking mirrors African Chattel Slavery.
