During the Napoleonic Wars, the royal family in Portugal fled to the Brazilian colony in South America. They ruled from Brazil for several years, even after Napoleon's defeat. The king returned to Portugal after the people there demanded that he return, though he left his son, Dom Pedro, to rule Brazil. In 1822, after hearing of discussion of removing his power, Pedro declared independence from Portugal and was crowned the emperor of Brazil. In 1824, Portugal acknowledged Brazil's independence.

After the first failed revolution in Italy, the Italians formed an alliance with the French, and were able take land from Austria. They then went and captured Sicily and were able to get the Italians from central Italy to join them. After capturing southern Italy, they formed the Italian Empire, though they did not have control over Venice and Rome. Venice was given to France by Austria, and was in turn given to Italy. Rome would not be taken by Italy until 1870, but when it was, it became the capital of the Italian Empire.

Many people in the German states wanted to be a unified nation, so they agreed to join up with Prussia. They offered the king the crown of Germany, but the king declined, not wanting a crown given to him from the liberals. Years later, after a new king a succeeded the throne, Otto Von Bismarck was able to gain control of the Prussian army, and united Germany through war. He was soon made the emperor of Germany. Germany then became one of the largest powers in Europe.

Dom Pedro was the leader of the "revolution", and was also the son of the king of Portugal, the country that had control over Brazil. In September of 1822, he declared Brazil an independent nation and was crowned emperor in December. Portugal acknowledged Brazil as it's own country one year after the United States did in 1824. Dom Pedro was able to establish diplomatic relationships with other countries in Europe afterwards. Pedro's popularity began to decline the longer he ruled because of his impulsive decisions. In 1831, Pedro resigned from the throne.

In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi set out to capture Sicily and Naples. A revolution in Sicily was able to considerably help in in his conquest. After capturing Sicily, Garibaldi moved on to Naples, which he was able to capture and had over to the king of northern Italy. When the kingdom of Italy was formed, Garibaldi was opposed to it. He said the soldiers that had conquered half of Italy should have been treated better. He also hated the way the provinces of Italy were governed.
