The Fall of Jerusalem - Angela

The authors are Raymond d’Aguiliers, a Crusader, and Ibn al-Athir, a 13th century Muslim historian. They both wrote about the capture of Jerusalem by the Franks in 1099. D’Aguiliers wrote about the Temple of Solomon and how it was a bigger deal than the corpses in the streets. Al-Athir wrote about the Franks’ violence and greed as they killed more than 70 000 people and stole many candelabras and other merchandise.

I believe that the writers wrote these accounts for information. I have reason to think that they wanted to communicate their thoughts and conclusions for others to, perhaps, read and know.

Raymond d’Aguiliers focuses on Solomon’s Temple aka the First Temple, which was a place of worship, a monument, and as d’Aguiliers wrote, “a place where religious services are ordinarily chanted.” One can tell that he describes it as a bloodbath with the line, “... men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins.” Ibn Al-Athir focuses on the Franks and the havoc they wreaked upon Jerusalem. Al-Athir paints a scene of sympathy in lines such as, “... devout and ascetic men who had left their homelands to live pious lives of seclusion in the holy place.” Al-Athir also described the damage they had done and how many people’s lives they ended.

These accounts are similar because they are talking about the fall of Jerusalem and they both describe it as a negative event. They are, however, different because their focuses are not the same and they tell different things.

1) The author of the first passage is Crusader Raymond d'Aguiliers who wrote this is 1099. The author of the second passage is Ibn al-Athir who wrote this in the thirteenth century.

2) The purpose of why these authors wrote about these events was so the blood and sacrifices during Fall of Jerusalem is never forgotten.

3) The writers perspectives are as a witness to this horrible event. They focus on the bloodshed and describe the event as a great misfortune.

4) Just by the passages you can feel the deep sorrow of this event and how greatly it impacted those involved. The first account makes a short, suffice summary whereas the second account goes more into detail about the event such as describing the downfall of Dome of the Rock.

1. It was written by Ibn Al-Athir, and Raymond d'Aguiliers in 1099
2. I think the writers wrote these events to communicate the events that happened and keep a record of history.

3.I think when writers account events, they often look at their side of the story. This is because they are mostly looking at their opinion as well as the opinion of people around them. This is mainly why there are often two sides to a story. While Ibn Al Athir focussed more on the death of the muslims and the population of people they were with, like the Imams, the scholars, and the inhabitants at that time, Raymond d'Aguiliers focussed on what generally happened.

4. Ibn Al Athir's account was looked at a wider scale stating details like the statistics. Raymond d'Aguiliers used a very detailed form of writing, where he talked about what he saw, which were people on the streets and blood everywhere.
