Setting is more than just the time and place in this story. The setting of the smart house also serves as the main character within the story. Therefore providing an element of personification. Review the story for details that show examples of the personified house and explain how it gives an example of a human characteristic. How do the examples of personification show how the house changes, like a character would, throughout the story?

So, the author explores the possibility of a bomb being dropped because there were a lot of tensions between Russia and the US during that time and the threat of that was a real possibility.

The house is personified because it does daily human tasks. It is desperate to please but then it's desperate to save itself. And like all humans, it fails. It is the main character since there are no other humans. It's easier for the reader to sympathize.

"This was the one house left standing" "At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles" You can tell that all the other houses were destroyed since this house was the last standing, and that the city was all ruined from something radioactive. Then the story describes the exterior of the house. "...the house had been burned, evenly free of its white paint" "... save for five places." the five places were the family members who were burned instead of the spots of the house behind them, leaving their silhouette. You can tell that they were burned by something and that there are probably no more people alive. The final event was when the house burned down. After all these events you can tell from the past that there was probably a war that killed everyone.
