It is the main character since there are no other humans. Then the story describes the exterior of the house. "...the house had been burned, evenly free of its white paint" "... save for five places." the five places were the family members who were burned instead of the spots of the house behind them, leaving their silhouette. You can tell that they were burned by something and that there are probably no more people alive. The final event was when the house burned down.
