I think that what the Reverend Ballou was saying cause a big impact for Joseph cause he could relate in some way. First of all and the most obvious I guess, his name was Joseph and of course his name is Joseph too. The name Mary is pretty similar to what he called Madeline. Joseph was very stunned and surprised when the Reverend mentioned the angels helping them, and he was angry and confused because no "angels" helped Madeline when she was having the baby.

He disagrees mobviously with the reverend because of the experiences he had and he does not think there is such things as angels.

In Joseph's conversation with Reverend Ballou, they discussed Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. When Joseph asked where the angels were, he was referring to his own experience with Maddie and Jupiter. This is an important moment for Joseph because he has never been to church before and the first time he goes, he relates with arguably the most famous religious figure there is.

This was also very important because we can percieve how Joseph in some way wished the angles would have been there for him, but they werent so he felt ignored.

I think that the discussion Joseph had with Reverend made him feel connected and he related to the story Reverend told. The story that Reverend told was very similar to Madeline's and Josephs story. A lot of bad events have happened in Josephs life, loosing Madeline and Jupiter is one and because of all of these tragedies Joseph doesn't believe in Angels. Joseph was upset when the Reverend said that the angels are everywhere, because he feels like Angels are fake since his life is full of tragedies.

To everyone else it is just telling the facts and what happened. I think that Joseph was mad becausee he thinks that if angels excist then why dont they stop the bad things, and if they are there to keep us company where were they when he was in a bad moment.
