1- In the book, greasers and soc's were rivals. For example, there were fights called a rumble. In the real 1970's. There was not a group called the soc's.
2- Another difference is that in the book, Dally didn't grease his hair. He was against that. In the real 1970's there was a very popular fashion of greasing their hair.
3- I the book, the greasers gang mostly used a switchblade. Ponyboy used it to kill a soc. In the real 70's, a switchblade was not a popular weapon. In the book, the greasers did.

There were many examples of S.E Hinton using history. One example of S.E Hinton including variations of history is the fashion of the greasers. Back then, there was a greaser fashion like the style in the book. Slick back hair, white t-shirt, leather jackets and jeans. In the book, the greasers liked to listen to Elvis Presly. He had a greaser fashion too. Their style was somewhat based off of him. In the book, the author S.E Hinton used this example of history in her book, "The Outsiders".
