The Smooth ER is a lipid synthesis factory. All other membranes need lipids to exist. The cell membrane uses the phospholipids the Smooth ER's lipids to form its structure. Additionally, the Smooth ER forms steroid hormones, like testosterone and estrogen, that carry messages out through the whole cell.
