Diversity and inclusion are still a largely unresolved issue in academia. The problems are quite different however, for those who are not included or struggle to do so, and those who are in the mainstream (or hegemonic or powerful positions). Those could be male, German, white, professor, and more, depending on context. I am happy to talk about how I ended up being able to manage my time effectively (or so I think at least!). At least I always manage to stay calm in spite of all challenges, deadlines etc. ahead. Staying calm is the basis for working effectively and getting the most out of the day. Panic is your worst enemy. The blueprint I can provide might not work for everybody, but at least it is always good to reflect about oneā€™s own time management. For me, this is an important topic for several reasons. In Germany, unfortunately, the phase of starting a family and the phase when the scientific career really takes off coincide. As head of the cross-faculty mentoring programs at the university, I saw many women for whom compatibility was a larger problem than expected. I am a full-time working mother myself, and even spent some years of that time working far away from the family home, so I may share my experiences and strategies.

Background: I did my PhD (and beginning PostDoc phase) within a DFG funded project with two positions at different universities that included e.g. joint longitudinal data acquisition (experimental and semi-naturalistic), joint data coding and training / monitoring of research assistants; joint (interdisciplinary) writing etc., but also working on / discussing the individual dissertations. I am happy to share experiences on what worked well but also on the challenges in collaborating in this way.

Scientific conferences provide a great opportunity to (1) increase the visibility of yourself, your research, and your group, (2) connect with other junior and senior researchers in your area, and (3) learn about the state of the art and recent trends in your community. 
Since I did my PhD in a group from a different research area, Iā€™ve attended conference mostly alone in the first years. Meanwhile, I tend to have people from my own group around me, and I usually see various friends and colleagues at conferences that I met over the years. Thus, I know the different experiences you may have at conferences, and believe that I can give suggestions on what to pay attention to in either case, in order to make the most out of your attendance.
