education and secondary socialisation

education provides secondary socialisation that promotes value consensus and collective consensus. using positive and negative sanctions helps maintain social solidarity due to the fact that behaviour is being kept orderly to benefit wider society. For example, if a student demonstrates deviant behaviour in school they could be excluded, showing them that this isn't acceptable in wider society. Marxist Louis Althusser agrees that the reinforcement of rules teaches those in education how society runs, however he states this happens to manipulate individuals into being inferior to the bourgeoisie

education and a trained & qualified workforce

the fragmented curriculum reflects the fragmented division of labour in society, hence preparing students to go into society with the best set of skills for them. This contributes to social solidarity as everyone has a positive function to perform. however, Althusser argues that the function of education is to create an obedient workforce that reinforces the social division of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. This can be counter argued as you can use meritocracy as proof that everyone has an equal opportuntity

Parsons argued that the education system is a miniature society that helps individuals make the transition between ascribed and the particularisation values of the family, as well as achieved status and the universal values of wider society. Education emphasises meritocratic values that help individuals learn that people all individuals are treated equally in wider society.
