         <title>How do astronauts train on land for the environments they will encounter in space?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Astronauts will be submerged in a water tank, 63 feet underwater, for weeks at a time. They do this to simulate group isolation and they carry out experiments and training exercises in a program called NEEMO-NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operation. They scuba dive down to the facility and once inside the dry chamber, breathe pressurized air for the entire stay. This means that their bodies become fully loaded with nitrogen, and they are unable to return safely to the surface without first decompressing for over 16 hours. Since scuba diving makes them essentially weightless, the astronauts can practice the skills needed to go on spacewalks. Isolation underwater also trains them to focus on complex tasks while maintain cautious awareness of the hostile environment surrounnding them. There are also techniques they can learn when they are doing oceanographic work because it simulates how to map the surface of planets (pages 237-238). </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>At 2G your face droops, and your internal organs begins to shift. 3G the liquids in your body become hard to lift and they pool in your legs, and your heart has a hard time pumping them up to your head. One more G and your vision dims because the blood flow to your eyes has diminished to a trickle. If the Gs continues to mount, flow to your eyes will completely stop and your vision will go black. If a few more Gs are added, blood flow will stop to your brain, and making you go unconscious. What blood your heart does manage to distribute around your body will not contain the same amount of oxygen. Your lungs are also suffering. Your trachea has been flattened. The alveoli in the lower part of your lungs have broken under pressure, allowing air to escape before it can be transferred to your blood. Though your upper alveoli are still intact, the increased weight of your blood prevents it from reaching them. Your kidneys can't filter enough blood to make urine. The compressive pressure on your spine is so severe that the fluid-filled discs separating and cushioning the vertebrae are in danger of exploding (pages 244-245). </div>]]></description>

Your internal organs have become buoyant.&nbsp; The aorta and carotid arteries interpret the intensified blood pressure as an overload and signal for the kidneys to filter out more fluid to the bladder in compensation. Your decreased blood volume has concentrated red blood cells, and your body's response of destroying them for balancing levels makes you anemic and tired. Also, your heart has to work less because of decreased volume of blood needed for pumping, so it will lose muscle strength and shrink in size. (247-248) </div>]]></description>

It also has to provide you with oxygen supply and handle carbon dioxide removal and protect you from any haphazard micrometer strikes. It also has to be flexible enough to allow you to mount solar panels, install cameras, and repair who knows what.&nbsp;(253)</div>]]></description>

At toxic levels, your breathing becomes very rapid and shallow, which is too inefficient to get adequate air into the lungs. (258). &nbsp;</div>]]></description>
