1.1) WHY SHOULD WE FOCUS ON BLENDED LEARNING? Sofia Nikolarea, Greece

Blended learning establishes a new model of interaction between students and teachers. Learning is taken out of the four walls of a classroom and becomes a much
more exciting and integrated experience. The practices implemented are appropriate not only for emergency situations such as the one we currenlty find ourselves in, but also for grading up the educational process, in general, to meet the demands of a technologically advanced world in which, however, the individual still holds the primary role and must be enabled to develop all aspects of his/her personality. It also promotes student engagement, responsibility and autonomy in learning, which is vital as each student learns at their own pace and is able to discover new talents along the way as well as have a sense of accomplishment.

WEAKNESSES OF ONLINE LE
Just encountered one distance learning weakness... the page collapsed (actually, it's happened repeatedly during the last 15'!!!!)
Well, then, since distance learning so largely depends on the net, one of its main weaknesses is that technology may fail us (poor connections/inability to connect to servers/sudden powercuts) at any given moment and ruin our ambitious plans for inspiring teaching.
It also requires a large amount of time for planning on the teachers' part and for completing tasks online on the students' part. Spending too much time in front of a computer screen is tiring both for one's eyes and brain and has often been the source of complaint.
Socialization and student -teacher interaction is sometimes hindered especially when it comes to synchronous teaching as students often while connected to a teacher's virtual classroom,
remain totally silent and inactive.

The flipped classroom practice has been implemented most successfully, I would say, as the pupils' enthusiasm and positive comments on their teacher's methods combined with a high level of performance on the one hand, and the positive feedback from parents, on the other, prove. The teacher herself also seems to enjoy the whole process and has utilized the strengths of the different settings available as online and in-class teaching become complementary and teaching gets more personalised.
I think I should use this model in my classes too. I tried it during the remote teaching period and saw that it works.
Explanatory videos are a great starting point in a variety of situations and teaching contexts. They could be accompanied by a google form or a quiz used as proof of having watched the video. It would be time saving as it would allow classroom time to be devoted to more practice. And practice makes perfect as we all know!
To solve the problem of school infrastructure shortage, students could use their mobile phones, most of which are cutting-edge technology.

Personalising the schedule of studies according to the needs of students is great as it allows room for self-paced learning and autonomy. Small group assistance and dicussions as well as individualzed tutoring are also very helpful, especially to the weaker students, who need more guidance and more time to consodilate the teaching material. It is also great for peer collaboration.
This is all very encouraging, builds trust between a teacher and their students, with the latter feeling more confident in their learning as they know they will get all the support they need to overcome any difficulties they might encounter.

The implementation of the Flex Model requires really good planning and good knowledge of one's students' potential, so one should probably try it with students that they know and have taught in previous years, not with new groups.
One other challenge is that individual or even small group discussions with the teacher during classroom time are not easily facilitated with the large groups that we normally have to do with (each class consisting of approximately 25 students). It would be difficult to organise both in terms of space and time.

On-site and on-line learning are supplemented according to the individual needs of students and a variety of leanring problems may be solved in this way as teaching gets personalised. Students become more self-aware and responsible for what they learn and how they learn it. They are also given the freedom of choice when it comes to the on-line course, which means that they may choose the course that best fits their learning profile and, consequently, remain motivated from beginninfg to end and achieve the best possible results.

Some of the challenges we are presented with concerning the self-blend model are:
-Finding the right course as the plethora of online courses available may be overwhelming for students. The teacher in this case has to provide appropriate guidance.
So, the teacher has to be updated with the latest and most beneficial online teaching resources in order to advise and direct students well.
-The age and levels of maturity, commitment and motivation may also be a problem. On the one hand, younger students are not as disciplined as needed to manage such independence in their learning process. Older students , on the other hand - despite being willing to make the effort - might be burdened with a lot of responsibilities and have such a tight daily schedule that causes them to struggle to meet the demands of both online and on-site learning. Remaining motivated throughout in this case is really challenging.
-Finally the on-site and online courses need good co-ordination and in case different students of a course attend different online courses, the teacher will surely have a hard time putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Students during the pandemic and extended school closures have become familiar with the use of technology for learning purposes and are ready to incorporate it in their everyday routine. Of course, it's natural that they might object at first as they show signs of "online fatigue" but at least they know what to do and how to do it.
I also find the Station Rotation Model very intriguing but, as much as I am triggered to try it, I believe that it would be really difficult under current circumstances, namely the lack of space and organization in greek schools as well as the mindset changes required in order to successfully go through with such a project.

Lack of infrastructure I would say is the main barrier to implementing BL at my school. There is only one computer room which is used by the ICT teacher of course and for the rest of us there is one room equipped with an interactive board and a projector which we use in turns so that means it is not usually available. Our Intenet connection also is not very reliable and often fails us. So, for safety reasons I always download and store what I want to present to my students. And I do the activities IF and WHEN the projector room is free. I'm considering buying my own mini-projector to solve the problem as it is something that discourages not only my students but also me from pursuing such activities. There are of course class discussions, trips and school visits _at least there were before the pandemic and, hopefully, we'll return there- but online research and work has to be put aside or assigned for homework and the result is not always satisfying.
And of course let us also not forget that the mindset of traditionally thinking parents and even colleagues who question the effectiveness of BL in an exam-oriented educational system like ours, especially with regard to Senior High School, is another obstacle that has to be overcome.

I think the key to developing students' idependent learning skills is to give them the freedom of choice. If students get to choose the type of activities that they would like to engage in, the partner(s) that they would like to work with, the form that an assignment should have (essay, slide show etc.), then they would feel more responsible and would get more involved in the process. If they are treated as creators of their own learning themselves and feel that their opinion is valued by their teachers and that their personal needs and goals will be met through a process that they actively design (with the guidance of their teachers of course), they will be more motivated and inspired.
It is also important for them to realise that school education and community life are interrelated and that their learning is not merely about achieving better school performance but about cutivating all aspects of their personality.
If we manage to make them come to class and work out of their free will and not because it's mandatory, then we have achieved our goal.

An assessment functions formatively to the extent that evidence from the assessment is used – by teachers, by students, or by their peers – to make better decisions about the next steps in instruction. Good practices for assessment activities, such as quizzes, tests, peer assessment and portfolios, are as valid for blended scenarios as they are in other contexts.

3.6) ASSESSMENT IN BL ENVIRONMENTS Assessment for learning is any use of assessment that is primarily intended to improve, rather than measure learning. A teacher's job is to destroy the "bell curve" and provide all students with differentiated input according to their needs, so they all become successful.

However, if I look more carefully at the test results and see that the student is having particular difficulty with the seven-times-table, then that gives me, as the teacher, something to work with."

I think it is suited for both settings (in school and at distance). Students always need to be in a position to assess how much they have learnt themselves, and be aware of their level of performance. Unfortunately, much too often we come across students who either underestimate their capabilities, due to lack of self-confidence probably, or overestimate them due to superficial study and limited comprehension of teaching material. Self-assessment should help them to develop self-awareness. And of course, it can take place either in school at a distance.

Peer assessment may more easily be implemented in the school environment as clarifications may be provided, opinions may be exchanged and feedback may be given instantly, whereas the whole process may be significantly delayed at a distant context.
I suppose the age group of the students also plays a role here. With older students, for example, (like us participants of this MOOC!!!) peer assessment takes place more easily at a distance, because they already have an idea what they have to do and how to do it, whereas with younger students who need more guidance, it had better be done in school.

Teacher-led assessment has traditionally been taking place in the school setting but, as our recent experience has taught us, it might as well take place at a distance setting. Throughout the period of school closures due to the pandemic, online homework and even testing was part of our daily routine. We became acquainted with on-line tools for correction and processing documents, or even discovered digital tools with which we could create self-corrected activities.
The whole on-line correcting process is not only essentially more time-consuming for teachers but, unavoidably, students have much more opportunity to "cheat" or receive help from tutors or parents, too. I think that this risk may be limited (I wouldn't use the term "eliminated" for obvious reasons) if the activities or the tests are timed. What is also important, is that students realise that it's not the teacher that they 'll impress by cheating. It's only themselves that they'll fool at the end of the day, so it is in their best interest to be "poitically correct" and respect the rules of fair play.

We have all come along way since last year when the pandemic broke out and we had to resort to remote teaching.
Personally, I remember how intimidated and stressed I felt at the beginning and how unsure of how I would be able to cope with all this. Yet, little by little, I started to become acquainted with the digital tools we had at our disposal by watching tutorials and experimenting myself. So, I gradually became more confident. I will surely continue to use all these tools when our physical presence at schools becomes feasible.Tools such as Power Point or Google Slides presentations, , You Tube explanatory videos, interactive worksheets, online dictionaries, games and other resources, e-mails for communication and submission of written work or tests, I will continue to use in class -provided the required infrastructure exists- but also outside of it for more independence.
In-school learning provides the benefit of direct student-teacher communication, which is irreplaceable of course, sets the framework of the learning process, helps build trust, promotes socialization and the creation of strong bonds between peers and also between teachers and students. Technology ,on the other hand enhances and modernizes the teaching practice, is more appealing to the young and therefore more engaging. So, in order to keep the students' interest up, a combination of both is required.
By showing a Presentation or an explanatory video, for example, a topic may be introduced and discussion may be initiated, questions may be answered and clarifications may be given in class. Further investigation, collaborative tasks (ie,projects) or individual tasks (ie. online exercises) may be assigned for homework. The advantages of in-school and online learning are in this way combined.
