Small slaveholders worked together with their slaves and sometimes treated them more humanely. You may be wondering how exactly the Africans were captured though. One way there were captured from raids around the coast. Another way was through battles , if they were in debt, or even as punishment for crimes. Slaves were not treated well while enslaved and often died of how poorly they were kept up. Since slaves were so cheap, slave owners didn't take much good care of them. Men, women and even children had to ensure the horrible lives of being treated with such cruelty. That was the last experience they had in their homeland before leaving. The castles would have 1,000 males and 500 females all crammed together. Slaves had to spend 3 months in captivity, living like this before being shipped off to the New World.
