Slavery is an extremely horrific event in history that occurred for about 3 and a half centuries. European slavers would carry the African slaves across the Atlantic on ships. The journey was brutal and many did not survive. The slave ships carrying the captives left from ports belonging to Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Britain, France, and Brandenburg-Prussia.

Africans were originally captured in African wars and raids and transported in the Atlantic Slave Trade to work on plantations in the Americas. In this voyage male slaves were kept in the ships hold where they experienced the worst of crowding. Woman often endured rape from the crewmen. Captives slept on the floors boards which wore the skin on their elbows to the bone. Africans were separated from their families, homes, and community life and forced to adjust to a new one in the Americas.

Fewer than 350,000 enslaved people were imported into the Thirteen Colonies and the U.S, constituting less than 5% of the twelve million enslaved people brought from Africa to the Americas. Slaves suffered physical abuse, since the government allowed it. Treatment was usually harsher on large plantations, which were managed by overseers and owned by absentee slaveholders. Small slaveholders worked together with their slaves and sometimes treated them more humanely. Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, beating, mutilation, branding and/or imprisonment.

Education of slaves was generally discouraged by slaveholders for fear that knowledge and literacy would cause rebelliousness. / Fun fact: In Utah, slave owners were required to send black slaves to school for eighteen months between the ages of six and twenty years. Also, Indian slaves were sent to school for three months every year./ The quality of medical care to slaves is uncertain. Although conditions were so harsh for slaves, many slave-owners saw that it was in their best interest financially to see that each slave stayed healthy enough to maintain an active presence on the plantation.

Once captured the slaves would be sold for as little as seven dollars. You may be wondering how exactly the Africans were captured though. One way there were captured from raids around the coast. Another way was through battles , if they were in debt, or even as punishment for crimes. Slaves were not treated well while enslaved and often died of how poorly they were kept up. Since slaves were so cheap, slave owners didn't take much good care of them. Men, women and even children had to ensure the horrible lives of being treated with such cruelty. Slaves would not only be sold but traded also.

Before slaves were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas they were held in forts/castles. That was the last experience they had in their homeland before leaving. The castles would have 1,000 males and 500 females all crammed together. There would be no space to lie down and very little light. The floor of the dungeon they would stay in was littered with human waste.

These conditions would cause slaves to become ill and the castles would be the last place they ever saw before passing. There would be confinement cells for the prisoners who revolted, were conditions would be even worst. Slaves had to spend 3 months in captivity, living like this before being shipped off to the New World. While the slaves had to live in these circumstances officers, traders, and their families would have separated chambers to stay.
