Athletes of Color and Different Gender Motivational Posters

Since I already have motivational quotes from athletes, I need to make sure all races, genders, ethnic groups, etc are well represented. Along with athletes, I need to represent fine arts individuals in my classroom. Currently, I only have male athletes on my wall. I was inadvertently displaying the oppression of females. I would like to use this as an opportunity to talk about prejudices and discriminations. Sensoy and DiAngelo (2017) discussed that all people have prejudices and discriminate against other people. We need to be able to challenge the social segregation that is built into the culture. In order for this to happen, we need to be educated about the differences all people have. I could also bring in athletes from my flag activity, especially focusing on our foreign exchange students. The two individuals I interviewed for my funds of knowledge described how important football (soccer) was but dominated by males, much like how male-dominated our college and professional athletics are.

Flag Representing All of Our Students

An idea that my group came up with that would help incorporate different cultures and ethnicities into my "classroom" would be to place flags in my room from all of the countries represented in our school. This idea would benefit two groups of people, the teachers, and students who enter my room. Based on my school/community research, it seems there is a lack of diversity in both our school and community. With the flags, I would also like to put some important cultural information from the students. For example, based on my funds of knowledge research, Spanish students begin learning English in lower elementary. It would be a great visualization that would lead to conversations about our diversity. This would be important for our school since, on paper, there is a lack of diversity. Our school does receive a high amount of foreign exchange students, so this would be a good way to get them involved as well.

Revolving Bulletin Board - Posters of Successful Minoritized People

I would like to have a revolving bulletin board of people that represent different races, ethnicities, cultures, and genders of successful people. By having successful people of color represented in this way, would help break racial barriers. This would give students of color access to success stories they can relate to. Currently, I have a poster of a white female in a STEM career, but I need more variety of genders and races. This classroom addition would also be important for the white students. It would be beneficial for the teachers and students to help break the stereotypes of people of color only working in certain career fields. Since sexism is also prevalent in our society, I would make sure to have equal representation of females and males. Making sure successful females are included in my room can help break the sexism barrier that the entertainment world portrays. Sensoy and DiAngelo (2017) described how corporate-produced popular culture has become more pervasive, which makes sense since sexism is everywhere. These visuals of what success looks like can help students understand females can be just as successful as their male counterparts. I would make sure to focus on real jobs, not the Hollywood "fairytale."Another discriminatory area that this would benefit would be socio-economic status. As the data collected from my school and community research indicated, a large portion of our district is low SES. For this re-design, I would incorporate careers in different SES levels. For example, I would make sure careers that require some sort post-secondary education. There would be careers (and individuals) highlighted from technical school, community college, undergraduate, and post-graduate fields. Hopefully, these multi-SES levels and multi-race/ethnicity examples would help break the structural dimensions of privilege, which in turn would help change the attitudinal dimensions.

Current Problems Facing Society

Another way I would like to re-design my curriculum/ classroom would be to make use of current problems facing society in a comprehensive aspect based on the -isms we have learned about. To do this, I would like to incorporate current events that have racism or sexism, for example, undertones in them and use that to discuss the equity issues we face. For example, we could look at the salary gap between individuals in the medical field. Based on my school and community research, it is evident we live in a non-diverse community and could be blind to many of the problems facing society. I would need to address the issue of "this doesn't concern us because we are mostly white" mentality. Due to our lack of diversity, it is even more important that we understand the issues other people in our society are facing. It is our job to educate our students on these issues as well. This movement needs to start with our teachers. As stated earlier, if we can change the structure, we can begin to change the attitudes!

Conclusion for Re-Designing My Classroom

I think all of these subtle classroom designs would help open the eyes of my colleagues about issues some people face. It would really help them understand who holds the power in the United States, the white male. As being from the gender and race that holds the power, this class opened my eyes to the idea of equity. Much like the staff in Richter-Furman's (2015) article on school assemblies, most of the staff are probably blind to inequalities taking place in our school. The more educated I can become regarding other races, genders, classes, and ethnicities/cultures, the better prepared I can be to help others. These re-designs would also help combat the rebuttal "claiming that schools are politically neutral" institutes. I think this is a common misconception in today's education, and it needs to be addressed. Hopefully, these classroom re-designs can start the equity conversation at our school.
