Personal PD Take Aways
I enjoyed the process of understanding how my students feel. We have so many students that deal with a disability, but English could also be a second language for the student. My fluency was terrible trying to read in an unfamiliar format.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals

The pros of utilizing foundational literacy IEP goals would be that you have a better chance of making sure that the work that you are doing with your students is working for them to reach higher-order thinking processes. Comprehension and phonological awareness are both goals that delve into accuracy and understanding. I have at least one student that can read exceptionally well. He does not always know what he is reading about because there could be a delayed response to the content, or the student could be unaware of what the words mean that he is reading. Phonological awareness can also help develop proper oral reading techniques.

The cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals would be that reading fluency is not necessarily a gap in communicating thoughts or ideas. Measurement of how someone reads does not mean that they are not processing the information. then the data can end up being subjective vs. objective.

Personal PD Take Aways
It was interesting to complete the activity with different symbols than the letters that we were used to using. It gave a good example of how kids learn letters, sounds, and words. It was definitely easier to memorize and connect words and letters that were similar to what we were used to. I can see where kids that have difficulty with retention would get easily frustrated and have a hard time seeing an activity through to the end. I was mentally drained with completing this activity. Put into perspective how some kids need a multi-sensory approach to make connections to such abstract concepts.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals
Pro - The pros of using foundational literacy goals is that you could really break apart skill deficits and be more targeted in skills that need to be worked on. For example, when writing a fluency goal we often think the number of words read per minute and forget about accuracy, rate, self-correcting and so forth. By using the foundation literacy goals on could really target specific skills of a broader standard.

Cons - There might not be normed data to use when writing more specific goal. Also, some concepts may not take a year to master. One might have to write a broad goal with objectives or be amending the IEP regularly once skills are mastered. A person might get hyper-focused on one concepts and forget about other components or the bigger picture.

I had to remember what each card stood for and be able to read it based on memory.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals
It is beneficial to create foundational literacy IEP goals especially as we switch to SPIRE because we are stepping back to work on more of those beginning skills and need to find a way to measure that for even some of our older students in 2-5 not just kinder and first grade. Cons are if there goals are more comprehension based or fluency based we may not see any gains while working on foundational skills and it will show they aren't making progress in Fastbridge.

Personal PD Take Aways

I found the experience to be eye opening. It put me in the shoes of one of my students who is learning to read. As more and more sounds/words were added my confidence and fluency went down. It was a good reflection of what our students go through. It brought to light the need for simplifying lessons, adding extra repetition, and building confidence before moving on to new skills.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals
Pros:
When creating goal related to Foundational Literacy skills, the goals have the potential to be more targeted to a students instructional needs. This makes the data collection more meaningful. When collecting data for any student, the purpose is to drive instruction; to determine where the focus of instruction should be.

Cons:
Goals related to Foundational Literacy skills may not be standardized. There may not be norms to follow. Having standardized, tested data tracking is can be important for showing whether a student is making the necessary improvement to close the gap with their peers.

When I look at the new reading curriculum, writing goals toward foundational skills would be more beneficial in tracking student progress and would give a better picture of where they are performing. I think that looking at Fastbridge and pairing it with meangful progress monitoring and goal writing is going to be the key.

The biggest take away was to have more than to have empathy for my students. I understand how much it can take out of our students to do this everyday.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals

Goals need to be set to allow for consistent tracking of growth. I also believe the importance of a data based approach. There are norms to base students data off of. However, often these goals do not properly assess the foundational skills we are working on. I do believe that there is a balance and an importance to both. Without some understanding of the foundational growth, it would be hard to understand where to focus your teaching or reasons for data trends.

The simulation was really eye opening to what our students experience when learning how to read.

Pros and Cons of Foundational Literacy IEP goals
When thinking about our goals, foundational goals can really help us see the progress that our kids are making in those specific skills.
