This really touched my heart because it is sad knowing that people of color get killed all the time and the rest of the community are just immune to it now.

I used to think that racism was not as bad as it really is. The incidents that have happened recently and reading this book has made me realize that there has not been much change in the community since the 1950s. I have changed my way of thinking knowing how the discrimination still is in America. There must be social justice, and law enforcement needs to follow that every human has the same rights and we are all equal.

After, reading Midnight without a Moon, I learned many things. First, I used to think that racism wasn't prominent in the 1950s. I knew there was racism, but not to this extreme extent. Second, I didn't fully understand the effect racism had on others, but because I read this book and Emmet Till's story I better understand. Now, I think that others need to be educated on the adversity certain racial groups faced and still face today. People need to hear stories such as Emmett Till's. These stories have educated me and taught me lessons. Hopefully, these stories will encourage others to use their voice and make a difference.

Emmitt Till wasn't even the first murder based off race and sure wasn't the last. It is sad that in 2020 it seems like nothing has changed since the 1950s.

I thought that because that is the way society perceives it. But, because of this book and our current world situation, I have realized that racism is NOT just white against black but it is something that happens between all races and all types of people. I now know that discrimination is not only based on race but there are many other factors that contribute to it.

I used to think Mass was a boring thing we were forced to sit through, but after years of hearing the Scripture one day it starts to hit you, the words seem more meaningful and more powerful than ever when you need to hear them the most. I now realize how important it is to really look at the small things in your everyday life, and how Jesus is in everyone you talk to. When you start to realize that you began to feel stronger empathy towards someone because you know that in them is Christ, and that he made us all unique and for a reason. My eyes have opened up to the struggles of African Americans throughout history and even today living in fear of the ones here to protect us. I now realize that staying silent only helps the oppressor. It's no longer a "not my problem," but it's a " what can I do to help not today, but in the future."

I always known racism is bad but I never actually got someone’s actually point of view of their life being black in the 1950s. It was good to read this book to fully understand it. So now I know how a person lived through it and what they experienced. The murder of Emmet Till was really heartbreaking because we later find out that the lady lied about Emmet whistling at her. So he got his life taken away from him for no reason.

I Used to think that black people after the civil war were treated equally until learning about Jim Crow and segregation. But now I think nothing really changed in the south other than slavery. Black people were still degraded and dehumanized. I know this because in the book you can still see remnants of the pre civil war era and how white people would boycott the black businesses. just because black people owned them. Also how White people would just kill black people for no reason at all. In the book you can still see many reasons of how racism still exist today and back then..

I used to think that the south had never been this inhumane after slavery was abolished but because I read MWAM and I learned about the colored peoples conditions, how they were being killed for wanted the same rights they deserved and how different and rough the colored communities life was in the south, even after slavery was abolish. They were still faced with extreme racism, and the book gives an example only a couple pages in when Ricky almost ran her off the road and called her an offensive term. Rose and her family went through a lot. Ma Pearl was stern and strict, and she showed all of that off in the story when the youth wanted change and when she learned Queen was pregnant and beat her. I now think that we need a thorough and deep understanding of this topic to help benefit and prevent the same thing from continuing in our life today because everyone should feel equal to each other no matter what. We are all human and this book helped open my eyes about what I didn't learn and about the murder of Emmett Till. He wasn't even in his own state when he was murdered, and he didn't get a fair trial. They tried to cover it up because of his color of skin, and he was just an innocent boy. My heart was aching for his family and that was when I realized that this happened a lot back then. If we show compassion and kindness to everyone, maybe we will have a better future and life for everyone, no matter who they are.

I used to think, before I read my chapter, that there was hope for the trial, for the men that killed Emmitt Louis Till to go to jail, but because of Rose Lee and Hallelujah’s conversation, I now think that there wasn’t anything anyone could do to make those men go to jail. I now realize that that whole trial was super unfair. Those men obviously needed to go to prison. They killed someone, but because of the racial inequalities, people have been upset and misled by the whole situation. Where was the justice for Emmitt Louis Till? Where was the justice for his family or the people who were fighting for equality?

I used to think the book would be about a girl that had a hard time with racism but because I read the book I learned so much more about her and her struggles. Like Rosa Lee's Mom leaving her at a young age, Rose not being able to go back to school, and people of her own race being mean to her because she had a darker complexion than most African American girls. I now think about her life and mine how society has changed for the better. This book helped me put myself in her shoes and imagine how things would’ve been like in 1955.

I used to think that this book was based on what the south used to be like, but I didn’t know that people were actually killed because they registered to vote or whistled at a white lady. Because I read this book and learned that Emmitt Till was a real person and was murdered for something he didn’t even do, I now think that life after the civil war was almost just as bad as before. I think this, because just like slaves most black people after the war worked for white farmers and they picked their cotton, they were also paid very little which made most children including Rose Lee have to work instead of go to school. The murder of Emmitt Till changed my thinking and my heart, becuase he was a youg boy who didn’t even know how the southern life was so even if he had whistles at a white lady, he didn’t know any better, and shouldn’t have been killed for it.

I used to think that by 1955 a lot of black people got normal jobs, but because I read about Rose Lee’s life, I now think it was difficult for black people to get normal jobs during 1955 in Mississippi. Originally, I thought that by the year 1955 people of color could get their dream jobs because they were free. This was not true because a lot of families still worked for American people. Lots of people still worked for them because getting a normal job was difficult. It was hard because white people would mistreat them and they could be paid less. One example is in the book when Hallelujah’s relatives store is robbed all the time by white people. This happens a lot to businesses that serve black people. The book Midnight without a moon has taught me that many black people were denied their human rights in Mississippi in 1955.

I used to think that segregation only affected the people who were victims, but after reading this book, I realized that it also affected the bystanders and witnesses. When Rose found out that Levi Jackson was killed because he registered to vote, she felt sick and she felt sad. Many other black Americans that were victims of prejudice acts's family members, friends, or even strangers that they didn't know, went through that whenever they heard that something had happened. Now I know that Segregation affected not only people in the situation, but also bystanders and witnesses.
