• Understanding learning styles - Teaching traditional mainstream classroom in America we often expect quick responses, but for most Native Americans, who listen extensively, evaluate/understand and then answer, the process may take longer.

• Cultural behavior in the classroom - Knowing the cultural background of Native American students, to listen and learn from their elders and apply stages they are accustomed to, will better the classroom. It is disrespectful to look at someone that’s speaking. This custom allows the person speaking to speak easier.

• Communication - The amount of speaking is limited their cultural customs. They are taught to listen and let the event lead them to their future.

• Knowledge of the Tribe - Tribes assign roles according to the child's traits. Teachers can pick up on the roles the children have been given to improve the classroom.

• Spirituality and Interdependence - Native American cultures often view the world as a harmonic and cyclical system of existence in which every living thing has a role.

• Importance of the Natural World - Since all living things have a role, humanity is not separate or distinct from the natural world; they complement and coexist with one another.

• Role of Elders and Authority - A premium is placed on “the old ways,” which elevates the status of elderly members of a society to one that is deserving of deference, respect, and veneration.

• Linguistic Diversity - Many of the 2,200+ Amerindian languages are primarily oral-exclusive and concept-based, which can sometimes present an obstacle to learning Indo-European languages with strict grammar structures and rules.

• Understanding - It is important for a teacher to have an idea of what tribe or nation an indigenous student comes from, and to know cultural and social values that are applicable to that specific group.

• Speaking Habits - Native Americans can be much more comfortable with silence and momentary contemplation than mainstream Americans, and it is important to acknowledge this in a classroom setting.

• Understand that the term “Native American” includes all peoples indigenous to the Western Hemisphere.

• Avoid the assumption that a Native American person knows everything about all Native Americans. 

• Use books and materials that are written and illustrated by Native American people as primary source materials, such as speeches, songs, poems, and writings that show the linguistic skill of a people who have come from an oral tradition. 

• Present Native Americans as having unique, separate, and distinct cultures, languages, beliefs, traditions, and customs.

• Most of all, teach children about Native Americans in a manner that you would like used to depict YOUR culture and racial / ethnic origin.
