"the combined military and economic power of the alliance was not distributed at all evenly. When France, the second largest economy in the alliance, started to distance itself from NATO in the 60s, it made up only 6.6% of the alliance's military spending, while the United States made up 77.4%. Because of this massive disparity, countries like France could do nothing to affect the US dominance over the region."

"The longest and most significant border between capitalist and communist countries was the famous Iron curtain from 'Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic,' which NATO surrounded with the ring of anti-communist countries from Norway to Turkey. With Europe in a standstill, the United States could focus entirely on preventing the spread of communism in the east [...] and the global south"

Fighting for Decolonization

"US calls for decolonization were meant not to liberate oppressed peoples, but to limit the power of Western Europe. [...] This is [...] why British colonies like South Africa continued to be controlled by Europeans living there." The decolonization of the global south under the United States lead to almost no increase in the quality of life of people living in exploited countries, but it did achieve the goal of limiting European control over Europe, further empowering the United States.
