Today I learned about the history of Guadeloupe and what influance that had on the culture (groups took there own culture with them in their heads and adapted it to the island). I also was shocked about the racism on the island. The last thing I take with me is the different kinds of cultural heritage.

Today I learned that cultural simularities can be found between the baltic States and India.

Proof of this can be found in the language. For explaining these simularities we are left with unproven theories. Trade en sexual relations seem to be the most likely sources.

Today I learned (was reminded) about the slavery history of Guadeloupe. We also discussed UNESCO and played a little game, with a conclusion that UNESCO has mostly intangible heritage. It’s focussing on a certain skill. Unfortunately there are a lot of skills we lost in the past years. We still have the (tangible) objects, but we’re not able to do it the same way.

Also, I enjoyed the little conversation during the break with the German team about their school. They teach students from 17 years and older in a 3-year study in hotel business. There’s a big difficulty: many Asian students come to Germany for this study, but they don’t speak any English or German. They also live together, so there’s no other urge to learn it. Now they have to do a test to get to the study programm, and 20% doesn’t pass.

Today I learned the name of the tree I first saw in Guadeloupe: Coccoloba uvifera. In Dutch: zeedruif. Beautiful tree. Beautiful leaves.

Today I learned about natural, tangible, and intangible heritage as defined by UNESCO. We explored many different examples from countries all over the world. Unfortunately, a large number of heritage sites and traditions are now inaccessible or lost because we no longer have the materials or knowledge needed to recreate certain products — for example, the Egyptian pyramids.

One pleasant surprise today was the delicious lunch. I realized how much I missed my Latvian food, but at the same time, I found that the cuisine from other countries felt familiar and comforting.
