Issues of Disinformation in the Philippine Context and How it Affects Journalists

Disinformation is one of the leading cause of problems here in the Philippines. It is when false information are being used to deceive someone. In this time of age, Professor Clarissa David of the College of Mass Communication of the University of the Philippines, stated that “Disinformation is orchestrated, it’s funded, … it’s planned. In politics, it’s run by professionals.” The spread of disinformation is actually timely since the presidential election is near, that is why loads and loads of false information can be seen in the internet alone. Events in the past years had put journalism under the fire. Apparently, the rise of mal-information, disinformation and misinformation have been the leading cause of this uproar. This caused people to question the quality, impact and credibility of journalism. The people's trust on media and journalism is already fragile, and with the sheer volume of disinformation on social media, I'm afraid that journalism will experience much more reputational damage, further affecting journalists, the news media and the citizens.
