When the user gets the initial "high", their brains react by sending dopamine, the "happy hormone" into the system. The user gets hooked on the drug, because it gradually becomes harder to get high as your body builds up a resiliency. Drugs interfere with the way neurons send, receive, and process signals via neurotransmitters. Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, can activate neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural neurotransmitter in the body.

Alprazolam or "Xanax" is a prescribed drug by consultation that can help treat anxiety and panic disorder. It works by targeting and decreasing activity in the brain. Xanax is taken orally, and dosage is increased periodically depending on its effectiveness. Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. Xanax may cause withdrawal reactions, especially if it has been used regularly for a long time or in high doses, and in many cases, addiction.

Cocaine and amphetamines fall into the category of Stimulants or "Uppers". Prescription stimulants come in tablets or capsules. When abused, they are swallowed, injected in liquid form or crushed and snorted. The short-term effects of stimulants include exhaustion, apathy and depression (the "down" after the "up") The immediate negative effects quickly makes the user to want the drug again. Soon the user is not trying to get “high,” they use it to be able to feel anything at all. Stimulants are easily addictive, repeated high doses of stimulants can lead to feelings of hostility, paranoia, irregular heartbeat, and high body temperatures..

LSD or "acid" belongs to a group of drugs known as hallucinogens (also known as ‘psychedelics’). When smaller amounts are taken, the drug can produce mild changes in perception, mood and thought. When larger doses are taken, it may give the user hallucinations and distortions of reality, a "trip". If you take a large amount or overdose, the negative effects of LSD are more likely to happen (Panic, Paranoia, or Psychosis). LSD is usually taken orally, as a pill, but can also be sniffed, smoked, or injected ("shot"). LSD is highly addictive, and effects start within 30-45 minutes of use.
