Additionally, Susie's mother used marijuana when she was pregnant and she used to discipline Susie with spankings, but stopped when Susie began to hit her sisters. The hypothalamus affects behaviors like walking, hormone release, and emotions. This is the last place where behaviors are organized before the body reacts. One can conclude that Susie may suffer from certain imperfections in her brain, specifically to her hypothalamus. This is considered inappropriate reinforcement of an inappropriate behaviour.  It is believed that "children who experience more spanking demonstrate increased behavior problems over time" (Stacks, Oshio, Roe, & Gerard, 2009). Additionally, she earns a sticker for every homework assignment she submits. This is considered positive reinforcement because she is given something each time she does the desired action. This can be an example of classical conditioning. The stickers are just stickers and are a neutral stimulus initially. Then, they become a conditioned stimulus when they are associated with completed homework. It can be inferred that because Susie has learned she will get a sticker every time she does her homework, it will increase the likelihood that she will do her homework. Additionally, her mother smoked marijuana while she was pregnant with Susie. Researchers found infants exposed to marijuana during pregnancy showed altered visual stimuli. They are also more likely to have gaps in problem solving skills, memory, and the ability to remain attentive. (NIDA, 2018) Additionally, according to her school psychologist, Susie shows difficulty recognising emotions and what emotion to display.

Furthermore, Susie's learned motives can be observed when she completes homework assignments. When her teacher began to give her a sticker for each homework assignment she turned in, Susie began turning in more homework assignments. The stickers serve as the learned motives for her to complete her homework. Because she is motivated by the stickers, one can infer that Susie Hanover is not very self-motivated. In general, Susie could be considered extroverted because she likes to watch friends play together nicely and actively seeks out new friends. However, what she learns may not always be appropriate, as she began to hit her sisters after her mother spanked her. One can infer that Susie’s development is not the same as her peers, because she bosses them around despite wanting more friends.
