Our whānau really enjoyed the hui last night, ngā mihi nui for sharing such special mātauranga with us. We all learned a lot and really appreciated the kōrero. The kaupapa of the Mana Kura Programme is incredible, and we feel so lucky to have this partnership with Te Kawerau ā Maki. It’s really special to see this mātauranga being shared, and we’re looking forward to our tamariki benefiting from this knowledge now and into the future.

I have a pātai I’d love to ask. In 2023, my daughter Olive learnt how to make Kawakawa balm for a school project at Kaurilands Primary. She named it Ōkaurirahi, as she harvested Kawakawa leaves from the kura grounds and used beeswax from our local hives. She still makes and sells the balm at markets. Olive is now in Year 8 at GEIS, and it recently occurred to me that we don’t have a blessing to use the name. I’m not sure how appropriate that is, and I wondered if you could advise us on whether it’s tika or not? Ngā mihi nui for any advice you can share—we would really appreciate it!
