I grew up in a Christian/Baptist family and attended church a lot growing up. In the church setting is one of the main places, where I would personally find the concept of music and spirituality intersecting most powerfully. Although I'm not a very religious person now, When I do go to church with my family I still feel the energy that arises when certain songs are performed, in my opinion there's no spiritual experience that can match it. One thing that doesn't lie is energy, I believe the most important factor in spirituality is the power of belief. It's the belief of the people in church that they are worshiping a higher power, that gives the music that's performed so much power. The Gregorian chant, "is the stepping stone where western music really begins to take off"(module video) so without it, a lot of the music that's been written and passed down in the church, would be nonexistent, especially since its the start of early Christianity music. Although, the style of Christian music I'm used to is completely different, involving a lot of texture and harmony to enhance the spiritual experience .

Concerts and the spiritual experience- My opinion based on personal experience

I don't find the idea of popular music concerts of religious or spiritual experiences convincing because I feel its more about entertainment at that point. I say that because for the majority of these events you have to pay for something and in my opinion you don't pay for spirituality or religious experiences. The most popular music concert I've attended was SXSW(south by southwest). It's annual music festivals that happens every year during spring break. There's no limited genre or regional focus, audiences can enjoy a variety of musical styles, so many different types of people come together and intertwine to enjoy it. The one concert I've been to in my life was a Kanye West concert on his st. Pablo tour and I can say that was not a very spiritual concert. He took what many people would consider a spiritual song "Farther stretch my hands" and made his own version, which is completely different from the church version. The *explicit* lyrics of these song give you anything but a spiritual or religious feeling which is another reason I don't think concerts are meant for spiritual experiences.

spiritual experiences from festivals I have not attended: Envision festival

Envision is a festival that's suppose to be a celebration dedicated to the awakening of the human potential. It provides a platform for different cultures and is aimed at inspiring through collective precipitation in art, spirituality, yoga, music, dance, performance, education, regenerative strategies and our fundamental connection with nature. You can join the spirituality for a fee, in my opinion that's something you shouldn't have to pay for. True spirituality is not for sell.
