Populist and far-right movements have been gaining support in Italy, and this could be in part because of “fake news.” Many voters used alternative information sources. Italians have low trust in the news media. In 2017, BuzzFeed exposed several popular Italian websites and Facebook pages for spreading misinformation, especially anti-immigration content. Those outlets had millions of social media followers, whereas most news sources and public officials in Italy have far fewer followers. Many similar accounts have links to Russia, as do the political parties gaining support. Members of those parties also call the media unreliable and attack journalists. Because of all this, many Italians believe the fake news over real news outlets.

Italy has one of the lowest press freedom ranking in Europe according to Reporters Without Borders, although it has been improving since 2018. There are many threats to journalists from the mafia and right-wing extremists. The current government is hostile to the media. Two deputy prime ministers called journalists insults like “whores” and “jackals” in 2018. The mafia is more of a threat in the south, where there have been arson attacks, death threats and violence. Nearly 200 journalists receive some sort of police protection in Italy. Political parties have a strong influence over the media, as journalists tend to censor themselves because of political pressure. There are harsh legal punishments for defamation, and freedom of information isn’t guaranteed in Italy unless the information is “relevant” to a criminal trial.
