Each August, Forest For the Trees hosts a weeklong event that brings close to two dozen artists to the city to work on murals. Since the organization's founding, it has sponsored the creation of 75 murals in Portland.

When Forest For the Trees first started, Hamilton walked along Southeast Stark Street, which is close to where he lives, asking permission of building owners to paint murals. Now, he says, there is a "market demand" from business owners and neighborhood associations to have murals painted.

"It activates an area that was maybe neglected before," Hamilton says. "It just draws more attention."

For emerging artists, murals have become a way of expanding their repertoire and building their portfolios

The artist who designed this painting is named James Jean, I’ve been following him for a while and only recently found out that this was his work. He thought of representing thunder eggs as a sort of statement of Oregon and used the other more organic shapes to represent things like growth and adaptability

I was walking around North Portland and came across this beautiful street mural. I'm not sure who the artist is but I would like to find out more about the artist and who they are. This street art reminds me of the history of the land and how it was stolen from Indigenous people. The person in the photo looks sad but is still standing strong in their power. To me this street art is a reminder to honor the animals, environment and the people who where here before the land was colonized. - Lyra
