Fisher was not just a great writer, he was successful in the medical field as well. In the 1920's, Fisher published his research on the effect of ultraviolet rays on viruses in medical journals. He also was a head researcher at Manhattan's International Hospital. He ended up opening his own private practice, yet during this time he was still writing novels, articles, and poetry. Later in 1927, he became the superintendent of the International Hospital in Harlem. He set up his own private practice as a radiologist with and X-ray lab in New York.

Rudolph Fisher started his writing career by putting his articles in the "National Association for the Advanced of Colored People" and the magazine, "The Crisis". He wrote his first book in 1928 and it was called, "Walls of Jericho". The book was about treating the upper and lower classes of Harlem equally. In 1932 he wrote, "The Conjure Man Dies". It was the first detective novel with all black characters. Besides his novels, he also wrote short stories like "City of Refuge" and "Vestiges". The most important thing out of Fisher's writing was how he wrote about black people in a way no one had before. He wrote about the uniqueness of black people and how they are just people.
