One of the functions of "important literature" is that it illuminates the issues of a given society during a specific moment in time. Clockwork Orange did this, Little Women did this. Yet both these texts suffer from a lack of glorious eloquence in diction in syntax. That doesn't mean that we don't think them important lit. The Hunger Games reflects the dark questions that trouble our contemporary society and make it worthy of reading. Make sure you read all three books or you miss the point.

Scott Fitzgerald, Captain Cook and many others.
