         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Exterminator) The main idea is that DDT, a contriversial pesticide has a huge impact on fighting Malaria, even though many reports and countries denounce it. Books such as <em>Silent Spring</em> have stated the environmental collapse during the use of DDT, while many scientists swear by the use of it in Rural African countries.<br><br>Heterozygous Advantage and Sickle Cell Anemia) The main idea consists of the fact that although Sickle Cell Anemia is a deadly mutation, in its heterozygous form, it provides a resistance to a malaria; keeping the trait in the gene pool.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Exterminator)<br>          DDT was one big reason why major countries such as the U.S were able to eradicate Malaria. The article states on pg. 4 "... DDT, a chemical that played an important role in kicking malaria out of the United States."  The passage also says that after the prohibition of DDT chemical, the number of deaths from malaria shot up to a point that countries such as South Africa turned back to the pesticide. Finally,   According to scientist, Roger Bates, only about twenty countries use DDT for malaria control, even though many others could benefit.<br><br>Heterozygous Advantage and Sickle Cell Anemia) <br>         Sickle Cell Anemia, as stated in the article, " can clog small blood vessels , preventing oxygen from making it to certain parts of the body." according to paragraph two, every one in five hundred African-American births, and every one in 1,000-1,400 births are affected by Sickle Cell Anemia. At the same time, the Heterozygous version of the gene has helped the trait stay in the gene pool due to the fact that it provides a resistance to malaria, giving them a survival benefit.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Exterminator)<br>         The article, <em> The Exterminator</em> starts of by saying that in the past, the United States had more that one million soldiers die to the disease before it had been completely wiped out, as well as in countries such as Canada, and northern Europe. When The U.S came out with DDT, (a chemical that was a major part of the ridding of malaria in the states) it was very effective, but was met with a lot of criticism due to it's affect on the environment, and surrounding nature. It was banned in most every country, but many people to this day argue that it would be more beneficial to use it again to fight back against the rising number of deaths caused by malaria.<br><br>Heterozygous Advantage and Sickle Cell Anemia) <br>         In the passage, <em>Heterozygous Advantage and Sickle Cell Anemia, </em>it starts off by explaining that Sickle Cell Anemia is a mutated gene that causes red blood cells to twist into a crescent shape, which can clump easily in blood vessels due to it's inefficient shape. It goes on to say that every one in five hundred African-American births is affected by sickle cell anemia. To conclude it all, it talks about the fact that sickle cell anemia was kept in the gene pool due to the fact that its heterozygous variation gives a resistance to malaria which is prominent in areas such as Africa.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>4.) What is Your Opinion on the Article?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Exterminator)&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;I agreed with many points in this passage, and enjoyed reading it. It was very informational, and gave both sides of the story. I think it was correct in the fact that DDT should be used more freely, and that it's good side outweighs it's bad side.<br><br>Heterozygous Advantage and Sickle Cell Anemia)&nbsp;<br>         This article was very factual, and straight to the point. It had many helpful graphs and diagrams to further explain the processes occuring, and I enjoyed reading it a lot.<br><br></div>]]></description>
