Internal conflicts and a disconnected personality

Ocean Vuong writes this poem in the second person, addressing himself many times throughout it. The way Ocean addresses himself tells the reader he is a person other than the one he's talking to, meaning it sounds like he is separating himself as a whole, which is between his conscious and the unconscious. "Someday I'll love Ocean Vuong" suggests that he does not love himself, and despite knowing that, in the future, there will come a time when he can love himself. His self-love issue speaks to internal conflicts and the desire he has to love himself.

Trauma/repression

"The most beautiful part of your body is where it's headed" is a line in the poem that tells us either a sign of growth where he is growing as a person, or a sign of death and the end of his life, but either way, it emphasizes that he is detached from his physical body. It’s believed that this is encouragement and a sign of growth.

Fear

"Ocean, don't be afraid" is the author telling himself not to feel a certain fear because deep down he does. Despite being afraid and acknowledging he has a fear, this line tells us that he has to get over it, or is trying to, hence the line.

Post Colonialism and Use of Subconscious Thoughts

Ocean Vuong’s poem notebook fragments make me feel as if he is showing self-identity and the subconscious thoughts throughout this poem by having explicit language in it as well as the fact that he connects to his family. To begin, this author shows insight throughout the poem, introducing many different topics from his childhood memories to relationships, which all connect in a hard way to explain. In addition, I have also seen that Vuong talks about war and violence, which also makes me believe he has been affected by war in a way where he got displaced, which made me believe this is why he wrote this poem. In this poem, I have also noticed the author trying to use humor and make you understand the pain from the humor. For example, “We don't say goodbye. We say, I'll see you soon. We don't say suicide. We say, He was such a bright light. This is not humor, but he puts it in a way that points out how people avoid talking about death when it's suicide, and it hits you deep. Lastly, he says, “sometimes I feel as foreigner, inside my own skin.” This refers to him having disconnections to his real life, and this also shows he has internal conflict, which relates to post-colonialism. This post-colonialism is shown by the Vietnamese war and how he is a survivor who has been displaced, which has created this self-identity, and putting his subconscious thoughts in this poem gave the readers a way to understand him.

Context of the Poem: The poem is based on the fall of Saigon, this event happened 1975 on April 30 near the end of the Vietnam War. During that time Vietnamese in the North force had been taken over by the city of Saigon which is the capital of South Vietnam. This event was very chaotic and was very scary at that time, which made people want to escape Singapore. The US were helping with the evacuation of Vietnamese people. The way US military had given the signal of evacuation to start was with a secret song which being the Christmas song named "White Christmas." This is the reason on why "White Christmas" is seen in the poem. The poem takes those tragic events and gives it a more personal and emotional way. The poem mixes the image of violence and war with scenes of men and women in hotel rooms, they showed how war impacted even moments of private and quiet. Also, in the poem there is a lot of imagery that gives a sense of such things as sadness, confusion, and power. For example, there are imagery of dogs getting crushed in street, nun on fire, and helicopters flying away, these imagery shows the fear and pain people felt.

Literary Lense

When we look at the Ocean Vuong's poem through a post colonial lense, it reflects on the Fall of Saigon which took place in April 29-30, 1975 during the vietnam war. To evacuate Americans and Vietnamese allies, the US had made the song "White Christmas" into a covert signal. To make sure that they illustrated the blend of culture from America with the hardships Vietnam faced, Vuong applies these in his poem by using phrases such as "May your days be merry and bright" and "White Christmas."The poem highlights the destruction, grief, and anarchy caused by the conflict of war, especially on civilians. An example of an illustration that is powerful would be of military brutality that affects innocent people, especially children, as seen in the poem by the statement "A military truck speeds through the intersection, the sound of children shrieking inside." Another statement is "A helicopter lifting the living just out of reach," which describes how some people were saved while others were left abandoned in the war zone. Vuong's use of "just out of reach" can be referred to as a colonial power, such as the US, avoiding the harm they had caused while the people living there suffered. Overall, the poem shows the terrible consequences and impact of war and foreign control, as well as how their effects lasted even after the colonizers left.
