Hello Grace, Marina Julia, & Sophia!

Your project made me think of this work of art instantly during my early morning walk to grab my coffee and breakfast. It is located at one of, if not my absolute favorite, regular cafes on campus, and was actually hand-drawn by a peer of mine in my Honors Anthropology course last Spring who has since graduated. Interestingly enough, her essence as a whole I find truly captures Poe's depth and almost macabre and inquisitive nature.
In particular, this work of art in its context reminds me of your project through the theme and tone behind both poems, "Alone," and "A Dream Within A Dream." The dark, squiggly, scrappy nature of the lines that comprise the man's face, in combination with his almost fearful expression, reflects the depths and experiences of trauma, dispiritedness, and despair in Poe's implication through his work that the reality in which we live is simply an illusion. The art piece itself is also entitled "Horror II" which instantly makes me think of the relation to death in "A Dream Within A Dream" almost as such an illusion of reality and death is a cyclical trap. Moreover, the man's youthful face, isolation on the canvas, and sharp contrast between black lines and white canvas reflect the shared experiences of Poe's "Alone" in that everyone feels as though s/he is different from everyone else as one struggles to find their place in the world.

Hello All!

This photograph was taken immediately following my infrared HIIT yoga class at 5:30 in the morning, as I returned home just as day began to break, quickly showered, changed, and ran forward with the sun on my morning walk to my regular coffee shop. While in an extremely literal sense, this routine walk of mine always reminds me of Frost's "The Road Not Taken," as I always walk the most obscure, winding pathways, when taking your entire project and this assignment into context the photograph itself holds such immense personal significance.
Specifically, this location, in its past and present, represents aspects of the themes of each major popular work of Frost's your project highlights. The bridge captured at barely 7 in the morning is located underneath its own wreath of fall-ridden trees, my favorite season. It is the point in which on my walk back from the cafe I am reminded I am so close to my place of residence on campus and am so close to getting to sit and eat my delicious coffee and breakfast, yet also leads into the region of campus in which all of my classes as an honors political science student were located during this past Spring semester. That past semester was one of, if not the, most straining, difficult times of my life with lasting effects on my mental and physical health from which I am still striving to recover. Yet in all of its trauma, the spot now represents somewhere close to solitude, somewhere that symbolizes utter strength and resilience as I succeeded socially and academically during that challenging era. It is somewhere I pass each and every day multiple times per day, leaving my "safety bubble" of my campus place of residence, in the dark dusk, in the rain, winds, holding my coffee and my breakfast.
Reading your project, I am also reminded of the "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and the holidays, as my mom who just visited and is picking me up for our favorite time of year would walk this route and chat with me in the early morning about our holiday plan, "Fire and Ice" and Acquainted with the Night," during a time in my life in what felt like a personal hell, yet today finally represents peace and serenity, and in an opposing sense of "Nothing Gold Can Stay," as although Frost mentions how "nothing gold can stay," my studio's theme and affirmation of the month are gratitude, and as I heard this morning at the end of our class I am reminded through this spot that although some may perceive the good in life as only short-lived, so are the negatives in life, and we must focus on the ever-lasting good in our lives and be grateful for such good in order to surpass the negative.

Hello Jake, Lucas, and Leon!

This is a photograph I captured while studying today (Wednesday) with one of my best friends at one of our favorite local cafes in Columbia. The photograph itself illustrates a collage of customers, flags, postcards, and affirmations all gathered and donated from local residents and consumers of the city and cafe itself. Immediately after reviewing your project, the overarching theme and ideology you all seemed to carry throughout your work were that of "nature" and its personal symbolism to phases of life and the profound ebb-and-flow with which Frost compares nature and one's own life.
In particular, your project makes me think of the collection of photographs, affirmations, cards, local promotions, etc. captured in this image as I am reminded of how absolutely insane it is that life has directed me on a path in which in that exact moment, I just so happen to be present at the cafe adding cinnamon to my almond-milk latte, looking up to a collage whos donors all happened to be at that same cafe at a previous time and decided to donate a little token of their own livelihoods to the local business, and prior to that were all taken on their own unique pathways across life that had led them to acquire such diverse collections in the first place. We all come from such immensely diverse backgrounds that collectively shape us into the individuals we are today. Through the good, the bad, and the ugly, just as nature changes so do we as individuals, and life has a purpose for each cause and each finding in one's pathway to further shape us into who we one day will become.

For me just seeing Shel Silverstein name brought me back to my childhood. No particular poem, before I had gotten the chance to review the project in it's entirety I immediately thought about being a child in elementary school. I remember the class would attend it's scheduled day at the school's library and the librarian would read a variety of books to us and sometimes she would read a few poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends it was there I fell in love with the poem "Sick". I chose the picture of my younger cousins because they are in elementary school and that's what I thought of when I saw this project my younger years.

Hi Allen, Irene, and Katelyn!

Your excellent project reminded me of this bookcase we have in the basement. It’s a collection of kids’ books. In your project, you said Shel Silverstein want people to look back on their childhood gleefully and without stress. He has a great message, and I think this bookcase reminds me of that. I can look at this bookcase, and remember the good parts of being a kid. I think SpongeBob and Finn the Human best exemplify the need to let go of stress. These characters always find a way to be happy and cheerful. Finn (and Adventure Time in general) is somewhat a symbol of a relaxed, happy life. He always gets to do what he wants, and he usually isn’t very anxious about anything. Finn shows you that he can do amazing things, despite being so young.

Overall, this bookcase is a reminder of the great things that children and childhood can offer. I can pick up one of these books and reminisce. I’m so glad that Shel Silverstein and this bookcase can help me see that!

This image above is where the side walk ends especially when you hit a forest. Reading through the slide deck provided about Shel Silverstein the poem "Where The Sidewalk Ends" really stuck out and geared me to a hunting picture because I walk on side walks or trails until the end and I keep going and going it states similar in that poem. This picture is me saddle hunting its a new version of hunting, look it up on google if you're interested to know about it because it is a lot to explain on here. Anyways, the poem states a lot of nature like "the grass grows soft" or "cool in the peppermint wind" these visualizations of fields or that cool breeze on your face is everything I have experienced with this picture and really puts it in perspective of a fall time. The one line that really sticks out to me is "We shall walk and walk that is measured and slow". This ties into me walking in once that sidewalk or trail ends and you want to keep quiet and take it slow so the deer do not hear you coming into the woods or you don't spook one on accident. Every step you take is measured by avoiding sticks and branches to not snap and when the leaves are crunchy you try to have soft feet. Going back to visualization of the poem it really painted a picture in my mind of me walking out to go hunt for a morning or afternoon and the picture I used here there is no sidewalk within a mile of where I am set up.

With the group I was in we decided on Robert Frost as well although his poems are great and he has many awards, he is very naturistic on which I connect with him and my research with him on a deeper level. This picture about was taken in the mountains of northern Wyoming my buddy Braiden and I were riding through the mountains on our ATV's enjoying not only the great views of the mountains, but everything in between. like small creeks and streams or animals running beside us. This was a road was not taken. These trails that we rode on out there is where no standard vehicle can get to or through. The poem states "looked down as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth". As you can see in my picture that trail we are on bends to the right and it disappears in the trees is what is being pictured in these two lines. Reading this poem it makes you visualize this road that no one goes down in the deepest places of the woods and this is exactly where I was in this Wyoming wilderness.

Edgar Allen Poe is an incredible poet I read a lot of his work in school growing up. He always is dark and deep. Now one thing I did learn is that he was in the Army from the project. Getting to the one poem that stood out to me was "Alone" this might get a little dark so I'm warning and going to the best I can to not go deep and I am working on all of this. Anyways, getting deeper this picture was after my first deployment I came home to spend some time with buddies this was my pride and joy of a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and a bunch of my buddies and I would go rock crawling and hit trails from SoCal to NorCal in our Jeeps, it was our getaway. Getting back from deployment this smile I had there was a lot behind it, to explain the poem states "I have not been as others were, I have not seen as others saw" this sticks out of the change I faced as not only from the Marines in general, but with being on deployment with my brothers and coming back to try to live an everyday life, again the transition is hard and will always be a struggle no matter what. I can relate to a lot of this poem and could go deeper, but I'd like to not. I do have coping strategies and I am doing well getting back into the swing of things. This poem is dark really dark and I enjoy reading Edgar Allen Poe's work because of it being indirectly deeper than what it seems. Not only from a personal point of view, but the word choices and indirect explanations of him talking from his experiences.

I took this photograph from the third floor of the science building at College of Dupage because it is the area that I walk around and end up doing homework. After working on my group's project after Robert Frost as well, I've learned that his poems tend to be about anyone's ordinary life. He's very appreciative and introspective of the emotions he experiences and shares it through his poetry. Robert Frost was just like any of us, and has gone through a lot but he pushes through. It reminds me of how much school work I may be bombarded with sometimes, but I will always get through it. In his poems, there tends to be a lot of imagery of nature and the poems you guys chose perfectly depicted that. Especially "The Oven Bird" i would like to connect it to my image as both present the change of seasons in one of the slide's interpretations. I believe the trees in the image I chose present that clearly, as we know that the colors of trees change as the seasons change.

It made me think of fall and the outdoors and my backyard because I vividly remember reading Shel Silverstein's poems as a little kid, specifically having the little book with the giving tree on it. Having it remind me of my childhood makes me think of this type of year because it's beginning of the school year when those types of books were read and I remember playing in the leaves and the fresh air outside. The giving tree is so clear in my mind from when I read it as a kid, and I had Shel Silverstein books, I remember loving the artwork in them. The fall time specifically reminds me of the giving tree because the poem is about compassion and giving and it seems symbolic of fall for when the leaves give way from the tree and create such beauty.

Hi everyone,

When I first looked at the poem “Alone” the image that came to mind was this photo of a bookstore my best friend had printed out for me. I love bookstores and libraries, so when I read the poem “Alone” it made me think of this empty bookstore. Poe talks a lot about feeling lonely and unable to find someone to who he can relate. He uses imagery to get his point across as well as language that lures you into a state of imagination. A bookstore and library have so many books and it’s practically the living world of imagination and wonder. If Poe could have found anything or anyone to relate to, I imagine him finding peace inside an abundance of books.

Hi everyone,

Looking at the poem “Where The Sidewalk Ends” reminds me of this picture I saw in a restaurant downtown. Silverstein speaks on the important theme of growing up. He discusses the difference between the mind of a child and the mind of an adult. When I look at this picture the bright light the person is walking towards reflects the big world we enter once our childhood comes to an end. The person in the painting is also looking to their left almost admiring the soundings/ saying goodbye while they enter their new phase of life.

A poem that stuck out to me, was 'Fire and Ice.' I loved how the poem was beautiful but had a dark apocalyptic feel to it. I took this photo at the Arboretum, and I used to drive in the back roads through the Arboretum whenever I was mentally not feeling well, because it was always a beautiful, quiet distraction. This tree was so vibrant and bright compared to all the other plants and trees. It reminded of the poem 'Fire and Ice' because the tree is so vibrant red, like fire, and it stands out from everything else in the photo, while the background feels cold and dull, like ice. I think the poem is very relevant today too, as said in the powerpoint. The world is filled with such hate and so much passion and desire as well. This photo, I thought, was a cool representation of the 'fire and ice,' concept in that the main part of the photo is bright red like fire.

Hi everyone,

Depression and anxiety are such sensitive topics and I believe Robert Frost illustrated the loneliness of depression so well in his poem “Acquainted With The Night.” Like many people, I’ve had my own struggles with both anxiety and depression growing up and sometimes even now in my adult life. The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness is something that’s truly helped me control my anxiety and open up my mind. When I read Frost’s poem I understood his loneliness and it reminded me of the all methods I took in order to gain control of my own emotional difficulties. I wrote about the statistics and causes of both depression and anxiety for an English course last year, and I learned that 6.8 million adults struggle with generalized anxiety, and approximately 280 million people struggle with depression.

Feelings of loneliness, rejection and being misunderstood surfaced and it took me to a place that was so familiar as if it were yesterday. I scrolled through my pictures and this picture right captured what I felt reading the poem and how I felt growing up. As early as I could remember I was being pushed off on someone else mainly my grandparents to take care of me. Where we can forget about our problems and realize that they don’t matter. That our day to day schedule doesn’t have to be so pedestrian. That life is more than just repetition. I think everyone should take a trip somewhere far away to separate themselves from society. To remember that we once lives without internet and instant coffee. It’s important and something I want to teach my kids. Frost defines the beauty of nature so perfectly. I love that about his style

These are the trees in front of my old house where I grew up for most of my life as a kid. Shel Silverstein's work reminds me of my childhood, in particular, the poem that stuck out to me most was "Where The Sidewalk Ends" because it shows the relationship between childhood and adulthood and depicts the brutal reality of becoming an adult and getting older. Looking at this photo I am reminding of the memories I've made as a child and how I used to view the world compared to now, everything was so innocent and easy back having a child mentality. I cherish those moments a lot and in a way I feel as though we should embrace our inner child sometimes and have a lighthearted approach to life at times to escape from the harsh realities of being an adult.

It was a weird feeling because it was very lonely, yet peaceful at the same time. It reminded me of "Acquainted With The Night" because the poem's general theme is about depression and loneliness, which is something I have struggled with and still continue to struggle with, but in a way, solitude can be peaceful. Sitting somewhere outside late at night by yourself is a feeling that's hard for me to explain, it's quite mysterious and melancholy, but also allows you to connect with your thoughts and be at peace with yourself.

It reminded me of the poem "Fire and Ice" because both desire and hate have the power to do more destruction than just about anything else could, fueled by our own selfishness, and that alone can turn the world a bad place or potentially end humankind. I would like to connect it to one of the poems presented in the slides, "The Raven" as it relates to loss and grieving. Although its been a few years since he has passed, we always send our love to him and buy flowers in the beginning of every month. My grandpa built such a strong foundation for my entire family, and a lot has changed without him, but I am extremely grateful for everything he has taught us. During the time he passed, my family's emotions were struggling extremely and it was super hard to process everything going on.

Hi Grace, Marina, Julia, and Sophia

Nice work on your project! I would say that your project reminded me of a night sky. Now bear with me. I’m going to paint a picture that I can’t paint with an image, so I’ll try to explain this as best as I can. In your project, it was stated that “A Dream Within A Dream” can be imagined differently based on the reader. You can think of a night sky the same way. Some people associate the night with crime, trouble, or general mayhem. You may think that anything can happen at night. The night can also be associated with a time of relaxation and rest. Night could be a time where you get ample time to decompress from a stressful day(but then it will come out again the next day, ha). It’s all based on the person.

Generally, Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be a dark writer, so I thought this would be a more direct representation of his work.

You guys also mentioned that Edgar Allan Poe has a lot of depth in his poems. Well, I think there is a lot of depth in the information we know about the sky and space. There is also a lot of depth to the things we don’t know.

In your project, you guys mentioned the theme of coming back after loss. My dryer was once broken and now it’s fixed! This may be a really simple example of the meaning of Frost’s life, but it reminds us that if something was broken, we can fix it. If you are depressed, you can fix that. If you don’t feel successful or happy, you can fix that. If you have a broken dryer, you can hire someone ELSE to fix it, ha ha(Well it can be fixed somehow!)! All jokes aside, the message that things will get better is powerful, even though it may be difficult for that idea to stick in. So many people stay unhappy or tired throughout their lives. I’m glad that Robert Frost found success later in life. We can find the solution to our problems if we just try hard enough to solve them! Big things can happen!

One of the best times I spent with her was walking her every morning and evening. Even when she started to loose mobility I was always there as a helping hand. Our walks came to an end on July 19,2021. When I had to say goodbye to my best friend and relaxing walks. The poem, 'Where The Sidewalk Ends", reminded of our memorable walks by the lake and the way she trotted with so much poise. Unfortunately our walks became more difficult and more of a struggle as she started to loose mobility in her hind legs. I will always remember our walks and great times we shared, but unfortunately it has comes to an end.

This poem discussed the concept of fire and ice. My interpretation is how the Robert Frost choose peace with the two. Frost was able to find an equal balance between the two instead of one just being cold and the other just being hot. At the end of the poem Frost states," And would suffice". Frosts poem reminds me of, "Looking at the glass half full", which is related to finding peace even in the most difficult times.

The poem "Alone" by Edgar Alan Poe, translated to me feeling alone during childhood. I always felt like the odd one out as a child and feeling alone. In this family photo I'm the only one not smiling, I felt alone and my face lets everyone else know. In the poem is depicts the difficulty of feeling alone especially in your early childhood. Although it may sound sad it's still someone's reality.

I read messy room and it instantly reminded me of the way I felt when I made this piece that I put in. I was feeling messy and cluttered in my head and my life and the way Silverstein captured that feeling was exactly what I expected to feel when I got excited to read their poetry originally.

I was surprised to find such emotion in the poetry of Robert Frost who’s background in my opinion seems very white collar and serious. Either way I was captured after reading his "Aquainted With the Night" because I spend a lot of time looking at night skies( extra point if it’s raining) and think about my life. The good the bad all of it. The cold dark nights are a place where I find peace and just like Frost it’s a place where I’m very comfortable.

This was a project I was working on symbolizing the broken structure of our current school system due to common core . The whole thing was a video of me making a peice of art that was then covered in criticism and eventually graded an F. When reading Frosts "Fire and Ice" I couldn’t help but think ab all the hypocrisy within our current systems and within ourselves. The poem is thought provoking in many ways because the symbolism of fire and ice can be applied to almost any two forces working against each other. Just like this peice describes how the standardized testing in the school system is actively working against the mental health, future, creativity of students.

The poem Fire and Ice by Robert frost really made me think about the world and what is currently going on. The tone and message behind the poem put readers in a mood to think about the world and its existence. The poem really reminded me of black-eyed peas and their emotional and heartwarming song about what is going wrong with the world. When I read the poem, I immediately thought about the hardships and conflicts that the world is going through. The choices of words such as destruction, perish, and suffice really stamped that image of the bitterness of the world in my head.

I found this photo from years back. This is the same stairs and boat house and everything from when I was growing up and when my dad was growing up. This reminds me of the poem "where the sidewalk ends" because it shows the relationship it has to a person from when they are a kid to when they are an adult. There are alot of memories at this place from all sorts of people and they are all great memories that I will cherish forever and some day will end for me but will start a new sidewalk for the future kids who come here when their children and they start to make their memories.

The poem Alone by Edgar Allan Poe really reminded me of the days that I would be alone at the shop. I would be myself to think about how fun it used to be with all my coworkers that I used to work with and the small talks we would have during times when it would be slow. It made me feel empty like the days I would feel alone when everyone left work and I would be by myself working until night time. The image that it created in my head is very dark and somber, it almost makes you feel empty.

This poem really reminded me of high-school and the year after it. As around this time was when I was really thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I always thought about doing what I love and would always think about what I would like to do and also be very happy in the future. I would be stuck between professions that I wanted to pursue. These years were very stressful and I remember it like it was yesterday because to this day I would always reminisce about those days. I remember being depressed because it seemed like everybody had their life figured out and I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do and be.
