Best picture of the Church today, with some touch ups! Loved hearing how this was truly a social location, among other things. I always teach my kids the church is where you could make friends/gossip/hear news from town, etc.

The hardest thing about this assignment is choosing just one picture! Private tour of the Old North Church (built in 1723)… We heard incredible stories of active citizenship, sacrifice, courage, patriotism, and hope. Such a humbling experience to stand in the presence of nearly 300 years of history. It’s a beautiful space, but to imagine that it once “matched” the ornate organ (purchased by church members raising money and placed there in 1759) just blew my mind!

What a blessing to be a part of this incredible experience, both for my own knowledge and the rich historical connections and incredible pedagogical practices I’ll be bringing back to my classroom. I am so excited to see what day 2 has in store for us!

I really learned a lot at Paul Revere‘s house today. I don’t know that I ever really appreciated Paul Revere for anything other than the midnight ride. I learned today that he is certainly worthy to be appreciated for his work ethic, ingenuity, and the provisions he made for his children and grandchildren. Enlightening!

I appreciate how much time our guide spent talking about African Americans in Boston. Often, the achievements and circumstances of enslaved and free black people in the Colonial era can be overshadowed by the white Revolutionaries. I love that on this trip, we’ve gotten to focus on all different perspectives!

The stories of Anne Hutchinson and Mary Dyer really interested me. Dr. Fea’s lessons on Puritan society and religious freedom and the perspective of how we view it now verse how it was viewed in the 1600s has been really enlightening.

Day 3 - Raise a Glass to Freedom!

This entire trip has been almost surreal sometimes. To be in the place that's truly the birthplace of so much of our country’s history is awe inspiring to say the least. Yesterday, we hit up so many important places but this is by far my favorite pic of the day. At the Green Dragon we drank in the history and significance of the place AND engaged in a discussion of what we had learned about that day. A discussion of ideas and understandings with like minded people who are all just looking to better themselves, just like an enlightened person should! We talked about revolutionary men and women and revolutionary ideas in the space where revolutionary ideas started to form the basis for this great nation. The America of today may be unrecognizable to those that sat here before us, but the spirit of revolution, the desire to make things better and the comraderie of friends is something I know they would see and appreciate in our meeting today. Maybe our conversations didn’t solve all the world’s problems, but it did spark some ideas that could turn things around. America may not always get it right, but that’s ok for now because there are plenty of people like us - learning about our past and applying its lessons to our future… the best revolutions start in secret.

I'm struck by how a space smaller than a football field could have centuries of history leaning up with one another. The hanging of Mary Dyer on the Boston Common for heresy in the 17th century, the Biston Massacre in the 18th century, the 1st subway in America running under out feet and the and the protests over the capture of Anthony Burns in 1the q9th century as well as the site of the "Soiling of Old Glory" photo near city hall in the 1970s.

So cool to listen to John Bell tell the story of the start of the revolution on the Lexington green. There’s sure a LOT that I thought I knew that I really didn’t know at all! 😀 It was fascinating to hear history in a MUCH more thorough and thought provoking way than I’ve ever experienced!
