A. What is the problem and what are the root causes of the problem?

The problem is that people are showing racial bias to Asian Americans, specifically in education where Harvard and other good colleges are showing racial bias in admissions to Asian Americans. Affirmative action is one cause of this problem. You wouldn’t think this would be a cause, but it truly is. These good schools are allowing less Asian American applicants because they say that there is already enough Asian Americans in these schools, and they need more diversity. That doesn’t make sense because Harvard is saying that to make a more diverse community, you need to limit the amount of a certain race that isn’t even the mejordy of the school. After that, these institutions just use Affirmative Action as their excuse. Another root cause is that elite institutions are starting to play a zero-sum game, where they try to limit a race, making the other races in the school grow. This is clearly demonstrating racial bias.

B. How has the problem affected the community directly?

This has affected the community directly in a few ways. First it has affected the confidence of certain people. One way is that some Asian Americans start to believe that they have a disadvantage as soon as they begin to apply to Harvard. Which is not good and is unacceptable for any minority group to face any sort of mental disadvantage when applying for colleges. This racial bias goes hand in hand with white supremacists and helps support racial hate. Since the 90s, the amount of Asians in Harvard’s freshman class has stayed constant while the amount of Asians in the U.S. has more than doubled. Also, the amount of Asian Americans who have applied to Harvard over the last few years has increased but the amount of Asian Americans who actually attend the school has remained about the same. About 2/3 of the international students are from Asia and out of 200,000 qualified students are from Asia. However, the amount that are accepted into Harvard is still around the same.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned with this issue?

The rest of the world should definitely be concerned about the idea of discrimination against Asian Americans for many reasons. First, the influence of Harvard’s wrongdoings, might affect other countries’ colleges to discriminate against applicants of certain races. It actually could have an impact in other countries because Harvard is a well respected school and other colleges might try to follow similar racial bias to Harvard. Another reason why this issue is a global concern is because it is also happening in other continents such as Europe. In Europe it isn’t a admission issue, it is just at random tourist sites and on the street. For example, a Asian American woman who was born in the United States was pinched by European gangs on the streets. Also, some Europeans asked this person “Where are you from,” in a creepy racist way, assuming that her home was an Asian country and not taking America for an answer. After that an old man came up to this person and said ni hao in a racist way, trying to get the person to speak Chinese even though she didn’t know how to speak it and only knew English. The last thing was that she was pinched by a European gang while walking on the streets. This is unacceptable and racism that is this bad should not be tolerated, whether it is through college admissions or just racism on the streets.

D. What is currently being done to address this problem?

A few things are being done to address this problem. One of the things being done is that over 60 Chinese, Indian, Korean, and Pakistani groups filed a federal complaint against the discrimination in admissions. Also, Trump administration sided with groups alleging that Harvard admission policies discriminate against Asian Americans. Another agency, the DOJ showed support to students and parents to test discrimination claims at trial. There also was a investigation of Yale for racial discrimination against Asian Americans. This is what is currently being done to address this issue, however there will most likely be more investigations and attempted lawsuits on these certain schools.

                                                   October 1, 2016
Once when I went hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail in Lone Pine, California, I faced terrible racial discrimination. I have been to this place before, and have also faced some sort of racial bias, however never this bad. People started to taunt and tease me in a mean way about my race. I knew that this trail specifically this region was a "hotbed for white supremacists." But, I didn't know just how bad it was. So when I tried to figure out a way to do something about this through Facebook, it just got worse. I started a Facebook group called Hikers of Colors, hoping that someone could help answer all the questions I had. Some people tried and were supportive, but others accused me of promoting separate trails and people telling me to not go on the trails. There were other even more hurtful comments that really tore me apart. It just made me feel terrible and realized that no matter the law, integration would still be a big part alongside the hiking trails.
