How Constructivism is applied in Health Education
Health Education is one of the most fundamental concepts you will learn to guide you throughout life. It not only teaches healthy physical behaviors such as healthy eating and appropriate exercise, but also how to learn and deal with emotions, stress, and mental illnesses. The concept of health also serves to keep you safe, physically (abstain from drugs, sex(STD's)) and mentally (healthy relationships, anti-bullying). Health and the idea of Constructivism correlate really well together. John Dewey said, "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." I love this because health is life itself also! If you don't have or maintain healthy behaviors, we won't have much of a life. In a health education class, Constructivism is applied through various teaching styles you will read more about as you explore this Padlet as well as health provides ways for students to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors through Constructivism and the content of health itself. Below is a video helping illustrate a little more about Constructivism.

Problem Based Learning

Some of the concepts discussed in a health class can be very sensitive subjects especially for students who may have been sexually abused, found their family member who has committed suicide, has experimented with drugs and or sex and is suffering from an STD and so forth. This is where I feel that the Modern Constructivism idea of problem based learning comes into play. The problem of suicide that schools are facing is outrageous. As a class, I want to have a lesson and think of ways that we can solve this problem. Eventually I would like my students to come to the conclusion of some suicide awareness/prevention strategies that they can share with their classmates. For this, I would have my students complete an PSA video and or poster illustrating suicide awareness and prevention. Below is a video illustrating an example of what iI would show to my students as well as what I would want them to create.

Project Based learning

Project based learning is one of my favorite learning styles with Modern Constructivism. I like it because, I like projects. I have an idea with this that students will be put into groups and instructed to give a presentation in class about essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Each group would have a different topic to present to the class for their project and would help all students gain clarification on these concepts. Below is a picture of the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to help illustrate this understanding.

Service Learning

Service Learning is without a doubt my favorite learning style that I will be implementing in my class from Modern Constructivism. I have many different ideas on how my students will get involved. I can have my students conduct and participate in a school clean up that correlates with environmental health, plant and maintain a community garden to help give the right veggies and fruits to the school for school lunches, and finally (my favorite idea) have my students serve at a local soup kitchen and work together to create the menu for that day so it in cooperates all the food groups and correct serving sizes. My students would learn about the components of MyPlate and also help and give back to their community and its citizens. Below is an article I found on the food quality in the local soup kitchen.

Inquiry Learning

Inquiry Learning is vital to students learning. It is said that students learn at their absolute best when they are answering their own questions. I too have noticed this in my personal studies. There are many times throughout my school year that I will be using Inquiry Learning but one of importance to note is having my students watch the video linked below and get into small groups to form their own questions and be "set free" to use proper resources to answer their own questions. The topic the video is on is body image and how the media portrays beauty. I feel that having students generate their own questions for this, it will really help them to see the issues and misconceptions the media gives adolescents and adults about what they should look or act like.

Structured Controversy

I feel that too often we shy away from contentious situations. (I know I sure do!) I feel that we need to teach our students that disagreeing, and speaking their mind is okay even if it causes a little contention. This is why I like the idea of Structured Controversies. I like this idea in the form of a classroom debate and or socratic seminar. There is controversy in the health world about whether physical activity or nutritious eating will help someone loose weight and get in shape quicker. I feel that this would be a really good topic of discussion. Prior to class, I would assign the two separate sides and give them the article linked below to read through so gain some back ground knowledge on the subject. We will then dispute and discuss as a class to see what we decide, (if any).

Web Quest (use of technology)

In class web quests allow for students to become more familiar with technology and researching all while learning content! My idea for this is to create a guiding worksheet for students to complete based upon the drug they have chosen to research. Research will be done on the computer and students will use the resources available to fill out their web quest worksheet. Below is a little more information on how a resource I could use to help create the web quest.
