ELL students can have extra time during New York State ELA and content-area assessments, as well as Regents Examinations. Principals decide specifications such as "time and a half" based on the students' needs. Principals should collaborate with teachers when making these decisions.

Separate Location (all exams)

New York State assessments can be given to ELLs either individually or in small groups in a designated area in order to create ideal testing conditions and facilities for ELLs.

Bilingual Dictionaries and/or Glossaries

ELLs are allowed to use bilingual glossaries during State examinations for all subjects, except for foreign languages. They can also only offer direct word-to-word translations. Dictionaries or glossaries that include definitions or explanations are not allowed.

I might use the linked glossary when I teach numbers and simple math. I can provide the student with the glossary in Spanish (home language) and allow them to use that for all all activities, including assessments.

Simultaneous Use of Examinations

For state examinations that come with written translations from the Department, ELLs are allowed to use both the English version and a version in an alternative language at the same time.

Oral Translations

Schools can offer ELL students an oral translation of a state examination if the Department does not provide a translated version. All translations must be direct oral translations of the English editions, and written translations are not permitted.

Written Responses

ELLs who use alternative language editions or oral translations of state examinations, excluding ELA, are allowed to write their responses to open-ended questions in their home or primary language.
