The main issue with this "theory" is that putting a deadline on income support doesn't make suitable jobs fall out of thin air. Most people are looking for work, especially those with disabilities, but finding suitable work is the problem. Especially with so many closures of large companies and the threat of overseas production.

I agree people can be as ready and willing to work as they want but if there is a shortage of jobs then where does that leave the people receiving welfare after that 6mths if they are still jobless? I also believe the belief behind this ridiculous theory is that people on income support are just 'bludging' and see no need to work preferring to live on tax payers money so therefore to prove this point and to prove there ARE jobs out there - we are going to stop funding their lazy days at the beach and their drug habits and their spending sprees and make them get a job.. I don't what planet some of these MPs live on.

A prevalent value & philosophy within Australia society and historically prevalent is that an individual should be employed in order to contribute to society economically and that volunteer roles are not quite as appreciated and can be criticised in a derogatory manner. Australians value ‘a fair go’ which is derived from equality and human rights, both of which have seen major improvements from the ‘Poor Laws’ to the current society with the implementation of institutionalised, residual & laissez-faire models of welfare.

This philosophy only places those under duress under even greater strain. Peoples ability to find long term employment is not enhanced by threatening measures.
It sounds easy, but in all fairness, without correct training and education, there are not enough available employment opportunities out there. Evan as a laborer a minimum education standard of year 10 must be achieved to get a White Card, or you do not have a job.D

'a job' its such an easy thing to some people. There is so much history into why individuals cannot gain long term steady employment. I cannot stand it when people encourage cutting off someones livelihood unless a stranger they have never met, lives up to their expectations of getting a job. Highly educated members of the community are struggling to get jobs as the numbers of jobs just aren't there, how are people who are disadvantaged meant to just go and 'get a job' as if it's something they can simply pluck from the community.

The central assumption is the concept of ‘welfare dependency’. The Government, some members of the Opposition, and a range of public commentators have voiced growing concern about increasing levels of ‘welfare dependency’ among income support recipients of workforce age, although they often ascribe different causes and meanings to the term. There is no doubt that there are increasing numbers of Australians of workforce age forced to rely on low social security payments as their main source of income for long periods of time. A more accurate and ultimately useful description of the situation in Australia at the end of the 1990s is that we have: more unemployed people than jobs, and much longer average periods of unemployment; more people facing the difficult task of raising children alone; more older people living in their own homes being cared for by prime-aged family members; more people with disabilities who need care from family members and face serious workforce barriers; and more older workers, especially men, forced by economic restructuring into early retirement. I have not found anywhere that the situation above is moving into a more positive outcomeDQ
