Reading allows the person to develop ideas and challenge old ideas at the same time. People were held back from being literate because the people in power didn't want them getting "crazy ideas" that things could change for them. Reading opens up a world of possibilities and challenges the thought process in ways that could threaten the power of those who would like to keep segments of the population repressed.

The list of things that would be lost is limitless. Creativity, imagination, experience, opportunities for discussion, learning a new skill, or thoughtful reflection are just a few that come to mind. This is the written documentation of our history. How will we learn from the past if the written word is not valued

I disagree with the statement as well. I do not think we will read less in the future, because of technology advancements. In fact, I'm finding the exact opposite with myself. The more tech savvy I become, the more I find myself reading. What I read & the way I read it may be more differentiated. I read blogs from a computer screen, listen to PD podcasts & novels on Overdrive during my commute, read novels on my Kindle, but I still read paperback books as well. In fact, every single book I bought for last summer's reading was a paperback PD book. My reading behaviors have changed, but the amount I read has greatly increased.

I think someone below said something similar... What WOULDN'T be lost if reading is less valued?! Joy, curiosity, imagination, passion, choice, etc. I actually just finished listening (during commute) to the 2nd book in the Matched trilogy by Ally Condie. In this fictional society they can only read 100 selected items & nothing else. They aren't even taught how to write for fear of civilians publishing on their own. It's actually quite intriguing to see the author's take on how that might effect a society as a whole.

Darla:
1a. Unfortunately, I believe the future is here. Many of the students that I have worked with are just like Marcus in chapter 1. I was a kid like Marcus and that was a million years ago. I believe the authors have it correct when they say that the tasks in today's classrooms are too limiting. My question from the chapter is how do we provide the teachers with the skills to "extract the information/data" to show student growth, while providing opportunities for students to be able to be flexible thinkers that can come up with multiple answers, and transfer that knowledge to other aspects of their life? Is this even possible in a system that prides itself on the "right answers"?
1b. If I am right and we have now entered into a future where we read less, then my question is how do we get the students to get the most out of what they do read. Again the authors have a great point in asking them the question, how did reading change who you are?
1c. I believe it is up to educators to show students that reading is and will always be a necessary part of their lives.

Just like all of you, I absolutely disagree. I was raised to love reading, and as a result, it is one of my hobbies and a quiet way for my mind to go elsewhere for a while. I know we are in a different time, and not all families put the same emphasis on reading, but I don't anticipate people just giving it up.

I think with the pace of day to day lives many people do more audio books but I don't think that books are not necessary. Everyone needs to learn how to read so they can do the day to day activities. Kids need to learn how to read so they can be responsible citizens. How would they vote if they cannot read the ballot? They will lose the imagination that comes with the anticipation of a great book. Students love read alouds, and we need to use those read alouds to share our excitement for books and reading in the classroom. The more we can share our love of reading with teachers and students the better. We are, at many times, the only people. they see reading a book. Not only do students and adults get the opportunity to visualize and predict what will happen next while they read, they are being awoken to multiple perspectives and viewpoints.
I do not agree that reading may not be as important as it is now in future. I think it will be more important for students to read and comprehend text, because so much of our history is told through print. However, I do think because of technology we will read less in the future. I believe reading is necessary, despite that technology, because even with technology good research and reasoning skills are important to weed out correct information from incorrect information.

I believe this biggest loss if reading is not valued is learning about history. I believe so much of our history is rooted in texts and stories, that it is important to be able to read and understand the events that transpired long ago. I am no longer in a classroom, however when I had my own classroom last year I made sure to have a large variety of book genres available to my students and encouraged them to read a variety of genres.
