When you are on the web, in most cases people do not see you, so you will not get judged on your physical appearance. This, however, does not mean that people will not judge you in other ways. For example people could be critical of your spelling and grammar on online forums. The quality of one's writing is something that some people may harshly judge.
I chose this rule because I believe that students need to be mindful when posting things on the web. I believe that perception means a lot in the world, and if you are putting something on the web that has a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, other people may have the perception that you are unintelligent. This is not a fair practice but unfortunately it is just human nature. That is why it is so important to check your work before you put it out in cyberspace for everyone to see. It is very important to put your best foot forward not just in person, but also on the web.

Context is everything

Context means a lot when you are online. For instance, texting language may be fine when you are communicating with friends. On the other hand though, using texting language while communicating with a teacher is quite inappropriate. Again, a username like s0ccergirl@yahoo.com would be acceptable if you're only using it with your friends, but to use it with a teacher would be unprofessional.
I chose this rule because it is extremely important for students to understand this. It would not be okay if a student was applying for an internship or job and was using an email address that may be deemed inappropriate as that would seriously hinder their chances of getting a position. Likewise using texting language would automatically be seen as unprofessional and would cost the student a chance at a position. Teaching students this rule will hopefully help them when applying for professional positions in the future.
I think this is one of the most important netiquette rules, so I would definitely have a lesson on it in my class. I would teach this by writing a few usernames on the board, some would be appropriate for a professional setting, others would be inappropriate. I would give my students some time to look at the usernames and then have them try to determine which is which.

Netiquette is network etiquette, or simply the way a person should behave when they are online (Shea, 1996). Netiquette is so important because it sets up rules to follow so that people on the web don't just do whatever they please.

Be forgiving of others' mistakes

Sometimes it's hard to remember that not everyone has had the same experiences and education as you. It can be frustrating when others behave poorly or misuse technology, but it's important to stay calm and not get angry; sometimes people just don't know. Mistakes are something that everyone makes, and education is a great way to fix those mistakes. Instead of getting angry, point out mistakes and kindly offer suggestions and guidance so that the mistake won't be repeated.
I chose this rule because many kids have trouble empathizing with others and are quick to anger when someone does something that they don't like. It's imperative that we teach kids how to properly educate and help others when mistakes are made. Teaching students these skills will make them better at communicating and interacting with others both in school and in the real world.
In order to teach this lesson, I would have the whole class brainstorm ways that we can correctly react to others' mistakes and some ways that are inappropriate. Then I would divide them into groups and have them practice scenarios of the correct way to behave when someone makes a mistake or does something upsetting.

Remember the human

This rule refers to the golden rule: treat others how you want to be treated. It's easier to be mean or offensive online because it's easier to imagine that there isn't a person on the other end of the screen. People might not feel responsible for their words because they don't see the immediate effect of the words. Although it might be tempting to say something inappropriate, it's crucial to remember that anything said online will be viewed by someone (and probably a lot more people than just someone).
I chose this rule because I think that this is a big factor in stopping cyberbullying. Kids are more courageous online because they don't have to face the person they're talking to, but reminding them that they still are interacting with a person that has thoughts and feelings would help remind them to think twice about what they're posting. Teaching students to remember this concept would help lower cyberbullying incidents.
