Group goal can motivate members by communicating what's the goal we want to achieve. 
An example for a group goal is group assignment. If all the members in that group aim to score a high marks. All members will involve in the discussion and likely to complete their part well done. However, if they don't share the same goal. One will not respond and reply the members. By sharing the group goal, the group members can work together towards that goal. It can allow the group members know where they are heading towards, and know what is wanted to be accomplished.
For example, a task group that wants to go plan for an event with regards to saving the environment. With the goal known, the members can plan accordingly, such that the events and activities can help to reach the goal can be more easily planned. Thus, the members can effectively and productively create the plans for the group. 
Next is that goals can bring motivation and develop skills. If the goal of the group is known, it can bring motivation to all its members who are in-line with it as well as push the members towards the same thing, the same goal. This can help promote and develop teamwork among member, which can help to make a effective and productive group. The goal can make the members develop important group skill, such as teamwork, tolerance, understanding as well as communication and discussion to try and achieve the goal. these group skill can then make the group a more productive and effectively group. Typically, the more specific the goal is the more the group works efficiently. For example, it is better for a sports team to aim for the gold medal rather than only wanting to do well. This way, all the group members know how much effort they need to put in. When the individual goals differ from the group goal, it interferes and prevents the group from working together heading towards one direction as the individual is likely to prioritize their personal goals instead of the group goal.
