Fulton, MO – March 23, 2025

On March 19th, the Kappa Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta hosted their signature philanthropy event, Mac and Cheese with AGDs, where they raised $630 towards fighting food insecurity. During the event, held in Hermann Lounge, seven on-campus organizations competed to see who brought the best mac and cheese recipe.

There was great diversity within the organizations and recipes represented from barbecue pulled pork mac and cheese made by Phi Delta Theta to the extra cheesy recipe from the Honors College. In participation, there were four Greek Life organizations – Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Phi Delta Theta, and Sigma Chi – and three student organizations – the Honors College, Remley Women and Gender Center, and the Student Success Center. Each organization brought a unique style and flavor of mac and cheese to the table.

For two dollars, faculty, staff, and students could try a single recipe, and for five dollars, they could try as many as they would like. After they enjoyed their pasta, each patron had the opportunity to vote for their favorite recipe.

The event raised $630, whichwill be donated to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation to support the fight against food insecurity in the United States. The Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation will distribute these funds to a variety of hunger fighting organizations such as Meals on Wheels America and Feeding Hunger.

Alpha Gamma Delta’s Vice President of Philanthropy, Laney McCaleb, ‘28, shared, “As an Education Major, I know how important it is for students to have a well-balanced meal and how it can affect their learning if they do not have one. I am proud to run this event because it gets the word out about Fighting Hunger while bringing my sisters and I together to fight for a good cause.”

While it was a remarkably close race with many delicious choices, the winner of the best mac and cheese award was Phi Delta Theta’s barbecue pulled pork mac and cheese for the second year in a row. Close behind, Sigma Chi took second with their deliciously seasoned recipe. Finally, Delta Tau Delta secured the third-place spot. Each of the winning teams was awarded a personalized certificate and bragging rights for the year!

However, while each recipe was delicious, it would not be honest to say the win was entirely based on taste. To rouse the competition and raise more money for the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, tasters could pledge additional money towards their favorite entries for additional votes. In the last ten minutes, the race against the clock inspired the top three fraternities who entered a recipe to start a bidding war to see who would secure the first-place spot.

“This event was a lot of fun, and it was a fantastic opportunity to give back to a compelling cause. My favorite part was the bidding war at the very end. We gave a hefty donation to ensure that our mac and cheese made it to the top” said Daniel Backer, ‘25 ΦΔΘ.

Three years ago, the light went out at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house at Westminster College. Today, they shine better than ever.  

After a major renovation project that took longer than expected, the Delta Tau Delta chapter at Westminster College has finally returned to its historic home. The house, once an aging structure in need of serious attention, has been completely remodeled on the inside and offering a welcoming space for the fraternities' current and future brothers.  

The reopening marks the end of a long period of the chapter being placed in different locations around the College and into the beginning of a new era for the brotherhood that claims the corner in front of the college.  

“it’s been a long process but now we are excited to be back in the place we call our home,” said Jacob Milam, president of Delta Tau Delta. “This house is not just a place we sleep and hang out it’s our identity here at Westmo. From my freshman year seeing it completely gutted to the end of my junior year being transformed into great living space for me and my brothers, it’s a dream come true.”  

The renovation included updated fire system and sprinkler systems, new flooring, central heating and cooling systems in every room, new improved bathrooms and showers, and new electrical all throughout the house. The kitchen and dining area was also redone to offer a more inviting place for the brothers to share meals together and events. 

“There were moments when it felt like I would never have the chance to get to see the house in my four years of school”, Milam admitted. “In my years we were living all over the campus, some of us in the triangle above the sororities, in the apartments, in the townhouses, and even some that chose to live off campus it really dragged the sense of unity we had down. It was hard to get to see the guys but now we're back and it was worth the wait”.  

Milam emphasized that they could not have done it without help from the school and alumni. “We worked closely with the college and alumni to make sure the project was not just for making it look nice but making a space that will last for generations of delts. The renovation was made possible from a combination of alumni donations and chapter fundraizing. Over the course of this long project Delta Tau Delta Alumni played a crucial role not just financially but through advising as well. The project could not have been done without Kurt Feigley, A delt from the graduating class 74, who led the entire project and put countless hours into making sure the house was prepared correctly.  

The official reopening happened on January 28^th, when they were all allowed to move back in and start making memories in the spaces past Delts have done. The true opening and revealing of the house were on alumni weekend. There was a celebration of the house on Friday night where all past delts had the chance to go through and see the new changes, tell stories of what it used to be like, and show where they used to live. Saturday was where most of the alumni who funded the project came and they had a nice formal dinner where more stories were told, and laughs rang through the new house.  

“It was emotional”, said Milam. “Seeing the older brothers walk in and be blown away from the looks inside, hearing their stories, and then realizing that my brothers and I are doing the same thing- the real full circle moment. This house is more than brick and mortar. It's the men inside, it's where we grow together, and where lifelong friendships are built.  

With the chapter now back under one roof, Milam said the fraternity is more energized than ever. Stating, “The brothers in this house now have something to motivate them, helping them look forward to making the most of their brotherhood. Our brotherhood has always been strong-but now we have the home to share it all in together”.   

Now, the fresh smell of paint has been replaced by something even better- laughter and the everyday rhythm of brotherhood through the house. With the spirits of the Delts being lifted into a new house, they are stepping back into the legacy, leadership, and lasting memories of the Delta Tau Delta Shelter.

With every game, Westminster’s star player, Annette Ramirez, continues to break records not only for Westminster College, but also for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), leaving an incredible mark on the history of women’s basketball. Annette Ramirez’s 2,000-point achievement is more than just a personal goal, it indicates a historic moment for Westminster’s women’s basketball. This accomplishment, achieved on February 22, 2025 during a home game against Eureka College on senior day, has drawn attention from both fans and sports analysts alike. This has establishing Westminster College as a focal point for talent in women’s basketball.

Ramirez’s historical moment was filled with pure emotion, as she looked back on the hard work and sacrifices that led up to this moment. “It wasn’t just about scoring 2,000 points; it was about everything that led up to it--the late nights, the early mornings, and the constant support from my teammates and coaches,” Ramirez said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better script—it was perfect to achieve this milestone on senior day, in front of the fans who have supported me along the way.”

In addition to being a great personal achievement, Ramirez’s achievement is inspiring the next generation of athletes. “I hope this sets a standard for future players,” she adds. “It shows that with dedication and passion, anything is possible at Westminster, no matter how small the school may seem. I want to inspire the next group of athletes to chase their own dreams.” Teammate and best friend Caragan Lockard believes this moment will spread through Westminster’s athletic community for years to come. “This achievement shows what’s possible here. It’ll push future players to work harder, not just for individual goals but for the success of the team as a whole.”

The chain reaction of Ramirez’s achievement goes beyond the women’s basketball team. The enthusiasm and support focusing on her 2,000-career points brought the Westminster community together, creating an impactful atmosphere that surpassed gender in sports. “I think this milestone isn’t just about women’s basketball,” Ramirez indicates. “It’s about the entire school. The energy from our fans, the signs, the cheers—it showed how sports can bring everyone together. It’s a powerful reminder that no matter the sport, we can all support each other and celebrate success.”

Lockard reflects on the impact of Ramirez’s success; “I think Annette’s success will raise the bar for incoming athletes. People will hear her name, and they’ll understand the hard work needed to achieve greatness. Her record setting achievement is attracting more attention to our team, which could mean stronger recruitment and increased recognition for Westminster’s basketball program.” Lockard states, “Annette’s legacy will be a tough one to follow, but it will inspire a new generation of athletes to aim for greatness.”

Looking into Annette Ramirez’s life beyond the basketball court, the impact she’s had on the team, the school, and future for women’s sports is unmatched. Her time at Westminster acts as a testament to the impact of perseverance and passion, informing all athletes that history is not just made on the court, but through dedication and the constant support of those around them.

The Westminster men's volleyball team had a winning season with a record of 18-13 being a first-year program. The team is made up of 9 freshman, 1 junior, and 2 seniors, and their wins and commitment have surprised the campus community.

Since the spring semester of 2024, when it was announced that a new sports program, this being men’s volleyball, was going to be added, many of the students speculated if they were going to be successful.

When the new school year hit, and students were back in campus, at first there was a disbelief for the program because of “important” factors. Eighty percent of the team were Freshman, about to have their first experience in a college game. They had the pressure of being the first team in the history of the program and they had to adapt to each other quickly. Even though, they were mostly young, and unexperienced, they didn’t let any of this affect their goals. “I think it just gave us a chip on our shoulder to go out and prove to people that we were legit and that we shouldn’t be overlooked just because we are a first-year program” said Jacob McAlister, their only senior and team captain.

As a result, they started their first season strong on the road, at New York, with three consecutive wins. That sent a message to the whole Westminster community, a powerful one. That they were not being underestimated and that they came to win.

Even though, it was a first-year program most of the players had already connected in the past. “We all knew each other before the season and did a lot of things before the season started, and I feel like it just then came out on the court, and I feel those connections just made us so much better” said Dalio Taouil a freshman starter of the team.

Therefore, throughout their season they displayed all their talent and chemistry that they had been building together, along with the staff and coaches to reach their goals. Their development and improvement were evident in the court.

This caught everyone’s attention and support for the program from the campus community. It also created a sense of pride and belonging to the program. “Got to be the on the first career win in college with a first-year program. And I couldn’t have asked for a better team to do it.” said Dalio Taouil proudly.

Now that they have completed their first season, which has been a historic one. The players are ready to turn the page and committed for the future seasons. “I feel like I see great glory when I get a glimpse of the future. With the many obstacles we overcame throughout our season I have high hopes for this program” said Khalil Peterson, a former freshman, who had an important role this season.

The people of Westminster see a promising future for this program. There is a lot of enthusiasm about the future and high expectations for the oncoming years.

With their talent, teamwork, discipline, and drive to win, the young Westminster’s men’s volleyball program haven’t just made history, but they’re setting the tone for a promising future.

The first Future Forward Summit Conference, a collaboration between the Callaway Chamber of Commerce, Westminster College and William Woods University, was held on April 3rd in Fulton's Brick District.

As of this year, the event was only open to Westminster and William Woods students for cost purposes, but according to the Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Development & Training Coordinator Avery Cockerham, this first summit is a bit of a “pilot run” on the idea with hopes to expand to other Missouri schools in the future. 

“Seeing how it goes, maybe if it is next year then it will be extended to other schools,” she said. “It’s really just a collaboration between the two schools… having both schools come together for an event like this is pretty big, and we want to continue to be able to collaborate between both schools.” Cockerham said.

Students were invited to come for an informative experience geared toward preparing them for success in the workplace, where they could connect with and learn from local business leaders. 

William Woods representative and Event Management and Conference Coordinator Haley Gilmore stated the summit’s creators were looking for an event that “gives the students a chance to express what they’re looking for from an employer rather than what an employer is looking for in an employee,” bridging the gap between students and future employers.

Gilmore also called the summit a “valuable opportunity” and said it was “welcomed on (William Woods) campus.” 

The event took place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., starting with registration and lunch at the Brick District Playhouse from 11-12:30 p.m. and then moving into the breakout sessions located in businesses throughout the Brick District. 

The lunch featured a student panel that was led by 4 students from Westminster and William Woods Colleges, and moderated by the state of Missouri’s Director of Workforce Development Julie Carter. 

There were six different breakout sessions with a total of sixteen local employer presenters, and topics of discussion included navigating benefit packages, financial planning, effective job searching, professional networking tips, cybersecurity, interviewing and more. 

Some breakout sessions and presenters also included the presenting sponsor of the Callaway County Chamber of Commerce, the local library, Fulton Public School Superintendent Ty Crain, and Dr. Alex Finck of Cornerstone Medicine. 

The breakout sessions ended at 4:30, when students returned to the Playhouse for a Networking social until the summit ended at 6 p.m.. There were also prizes handed out at the end of the day, including a William Woods swag bag. 

The summit’s main aim was to give students the knowledge and tools necessary for transitioning successfully into the workforce after college, to show them “how important it is to prepare for the workforce,” said Cockerham.

The idea for the summit stemmed from two Westminster Students, Tyler Patterson and Bryce Westerfeld. Westminster’s Student Success Center partnered with counselors from William Woods University and members of the Callaway County Chamber of Commerce to bring the summit together. 

Stacie Gove-Ortmeyer, Career Counselor and Internship Coordinator at Westminster College, said they were looking for a career fair event, since there haven’t been many in past years due to low attendance. She thought pulling William Woods and the Chamber in would bring up attendance and raise event exposure. 

Gove-Ortmeyer also said they were hoping for about a 100 students from each school to attend, and that the event will turn out to be beneficial for all involved so they can hold events like it more consistently. 

William Woods’ official LinkedIn page described the event as a “fantastic experience” and “valuable opportunity. “ They also said it had empowered students to enter the workforce with confidence needed to succeed, building connections for their future careers.

I hope this message finds you well. I’m excited to share some amazing news about an athlete at Westminster College. Montgomery Mills, class of 24’ and a member of the Bluejay wrestling program, has made history for the Westminster College athletics program, placing 3rd in the nation at the D-III national championship. This achievement is a personification to the time and handwork that Montgomery has put into this sport. Montgomery Mills is now ranked 3^rd in the nation at 197 pounds, setting a new standard for excellence at our school’s athletic programs.

My name is Cole Harrell, and I am currently a sophomore on the wrestling team, witnessing Montgomery’s hard work and dedication firsthand. I can assure you that the atmosphere around the wrestling team feels more thrilled after his remarkable finish at the national tournament. As a wrestler myself, I understand the hard work and dedication that takes to reach the level he has, and that’s why, seeing him succeed on the highest level, has not just inspired us wrestlers, but the whole school.

Montgomery’s top three finish at the national championship was outstanding, coming into the tournament, Montgomery was not even ranked in the top 8. In fact, he made the national tournament achieving the last spot available on his last opportunity. But Montgomery battled through the adversity with confidence and relied on his training.   That’s why, even though he came into the tournament as an underdog, he left as one of the best 197 pounders in the whole country.

Montgomery’s success goes beyond individual accomplishment. His finish at national sets a new standard of excellence for the entire Westminster College wrestling program. As a team, we have been able to use Montgomery’s success as motivation to work harder and to diet right, as that’s what we see from him. The energy and momentum that arose from his achievement are unbelievable, and its already serving as a source of inspiration for the younger wrestlers within our program. Mills’ success marks a point in the history of not just the wrestling program but the school. His achievements bring hope for new and competitive recruits.

I’m nothing but confident to say that Montgomery’s success has done nothing but start. He possesses the hard-working spirit and mentality that the whole team to stride for better every day. The best part about it, is the wide scale effect about a success this big. Mills’ success hasn’t just inspired the wrestling team, but the whole Westminster community. The wrestling team is one of the most overlooked teams in the school. We put a lot of hard-work and dedication into what we do, and finally, the Westminster community is starting to see that we are a competitive team, hungry for more achievements and success. His impact is already visible in the interest of recruits. Younger talent is starting to look at Westminster to develop their abilities while getting a proper education.

His achievement is more than a personal victory, it’s a milestone moment for the Westminster wrestling program. Montgomery’s success has lit a fire under the entire team, motivate us to give it are all during practice, discipline our diets, and believe in the power of consistency. The ripple effect is already visible as younger athletes and recruits begin to view Westminster as a place where serious wrestlers can thrive both academically and athletically.

From a personal standpoint, now that I've been able to witness that hard work pays off, I’m more focused on my goals. I take my wrestling partner’s success as an inspiration, because he has proven all of us that if you believe on your goals and put all your mind and hard work into it, everything is possible.

In conclusion, as a school and a team we are incredibly proud of Montgomery Mills for his success and his strong-minded ethic. His achievement reflects not only individual achievement but also passion and growth for the better. We are all looking forward to times of success for the Westminster Bluejays.

After brutal back to back 1-9 seasons that left the stands half-empty and the locker room hollow, Westminster’s football program had been in need of a jump start for quite some time. The football team had lost all motivation. Players went through the motions. Practices lacked energy. Belief had all but disappeared.

Enter Luke Butts.

Coach Butts was first named the new Head Coach of the Blue Jays in January of 2024. Through his first few weeks on campus he immediately made and impact by bringing the team together, bringing in a new coaching staff of young and hungry coaches, hiring Graduate Assistants from our neighboring school William Woods, bringing in a large class of freshman players for future years, and laying the groundwork for the teams new philosophy of play, #WORK. 

The #WORK philosophy is exactly what it sounds like. Putting in the work to create something bigger, but its meaning also has a little more complexity than what can be seen at face value. The word is actually an acronym, standing for We, the team working together to accomplish their goals, Opportunity, as in the opportunities that athletes are given and how each opportunity cannot be wasted, Response, as in how athletes must respond to adversity in hard times, and Kaizen, a Japanese word that means continuous change for the better. 

With a new philosophy in place, and everything going in the direction it was going in, the team responded. Off-season workouts showed massive results compared to previous years, practices became more competitive, and the team became much more motivated. Kendall Outlaw, a Senior Fullback for the Blue Jays was quoted saying, “These changes have made football fun again”. With this new atmosphere for the players, the team was more energized than ever going into the new season. 

The following season did not go according to plan, with another 1-9 season in the books. Despite that, the morale of the team has not waivered. It was a disappointing season, but light at the end of the tunnel could be seen. Each game was much more competitive, with a majority of losses being one score games going into the 4th quarter. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same can be said about the WestMo football program. 

As the team has been preparing for the upcoming season this fall, a new mantra has been introduced. A new hunger to win. 

The Hunt. 

“The Hunt is about going into each game with the mindset of a predator. It’s kill or be killed out in the wild, and we need that killer instinct going into the 4th quarter from now on if we are going to succeed” says Trace Helsel, who is going into his senior year at the running back position. 

More changes are in the works this offseason as well. Coaches are working to bring in another large class of freshman, add more lockers to the locker room, new machines to the weight room, and much more. Two new assistant coaches have also been added to the team's staff. Coach Dana Chambers, former head coach of the Fulton High School Hornets to coach linebackers, and Coach Calvin Powell, a hard-nosed O-Line coach and run game coordinator out of Maine Maritime Academy. Both coaches have extensive history coaching the game of football. 

With all of the changes already, as well as those to come, the outlook of the college’s football team can only be seen as one way; Everything is on the up and up. 

Westminster College football is back on track.

FULTON- Following months of diligent study, Westminster students showcase research at the 18th Undergraduate Scholars Forum. The intensity is palpable as individuals present to faculty, family, and the community. Every year, the event leaves people inspired, motivated, and entertained. From 9-4:30 pm, the public is invited to check out the various exhibits. For one rising senior, this is a moment she’s been waiting for. 

“I decided to participate in the Undergraduate Scholars Forum because I felt there isn’t enough talk about women’s health in schools. If I can show what society is lacking with this research, maybe we can improve that,” says Kamaro Tennant ’25. She was 1 of 4 students to open the program in the Gender Health Differences section.

With “Strokes in Men and Women and the Differences,” Tennant illustrates the inconsistencies between the sexes regarding wellness issues. What originally started as a paper for class blossomed into something more substantial. The other three participants are also raising the bar with conversations about eating disorders, brain tumors, and arthritis. Additionally, the Biochemistry major hopes that this will lead to deeper conversations in the future.

“I realized that the information I was getting should be talked about to a younger generation: it should improve the lives of people around you.” With these scholars taking charge of scientific research, they continue to prove that there’s more to come. 

Erica Amponsah, a Ghanaian native has been studying biology for years. Alongside classmates Kyla Gentry and Madelynn Kornik, she is presenting “Sips don’t Lie: The Effectiveness of Hydration Beverages.” The group compares water and Pedialyte as energizing options following workout routines. Furthermore, they even break the project down by gender over a week-long period. The results proved to be very surprising in more ways than one. 

“My group did some research before to know what we wanted to do. We then had to submit our proposal to the EIRC and collected data from our participants and analyzed them,” says Amponsah ’25. If given more time, they would have manipulated other elements, including the drink supplements, amount of people, and time span for the study.

The Biology posters cover an array of subjects from stress to cystic fibrosis. In addition, students are allowed to ask questions in a low-stakes environment. For Amponsah however, the benefits don’t stop there. “This will help me with future presentations and any future research in the biology department. It will also give me more practice with statistical analysis,” the young talent claims.

During this same session, another promising upperclassman enters the fray. “Speak Now: The Influence of Celebrity Advocacy and the Taylor Swift Effect” is a huge hurrah for Natalie Benton. As a double major in Digital Media and Business Communication, she is no stranger to intensive study. Falling under the Cultural Studies category, this junior focuses on Celebrity Influence on Social Issues, with Taylor Swift as the main example.

“The process of completing this research was very fun! I started by establishing regular meetings with my professors to collaborate with them. I had already written a paper about one facet of my project, but for the rest, I had to read many peer-reviewed journals, case studies, and surveys to gather all of the knowledge in my subject area,” Benton ’26 exclaims.

In October 2024, she presented at the Midwest Popular Culture Conference Association in Chicago, Illinois. This opportunity encouraged her to submit her work to the Undergraduate Scholars Forum. “I am exploring the potential of attending graduate school after Westminster, so the research experience I gained here was invaluable. If I do not go to graduate school, this project has certainly broadened my knowledge in my chosen field.” Regardless of her next steps, she’s proud of what she’s done. 

None of this is possible without professors like Dr. Kali Wright-Smith, who assist in advising and hosting the event. In her own words, it takes a village to accomplish.

“The Teaching and Learning Committee organizes USF, from the call for student submissions to the choice of keynote speaker, the selection of the student opening speaker, and the selection of posters and papers for award recognition. With help from other departments like our Office of Strategic Communications that does our marketing, the faculty advisors who help students with their projects, and all of the people who help us set up the day. It is a big collective effort," Wright-Smith says.

Furthermore, this is her favorite Westminster event because she’s exposed to various subjects. “I always love going to see the posters because they aren’t as commonly used in my field. The sciences in particular do an impressive job with the posters, and I always learn something new there.” 

So, what’s stopping you from basking in the experience? If you ever get to listen to these sessions, attend as many as possible. In this small midwestern town, the students and their big ideas- are only getting started.

For the last few years Westminster Colleges Kappa Alpha Order Philanthropy event that is dedicated to raising money for wounded veterans. The money that collected and raised goes towards purchasing a track chair Which is an all-terrain all-purpose wheelchair that allows these veterans to regain access to the outdoor activities that they love. We begin as a student LED initiative and now have a campus wide tradition drawing a lot of participants from student's faculty staff alumni and the Fulton community.

Alone in 2022 Westminster students raised more than $9000 to support this because this demonstrates how much power that student led charity efforts really have. With all the combined donations sponsorships and community events Kappa Alpha Order has been able to make a real and life changing difference to the veterans who sacrificed so much for our country.

As an active member myself of Kappa Alpha Order and being someone that has Participated in these track chair philanthropy events for the last three years, I have witnessed firsthand how much hard work and dedication it goes to making this event successful year after year. Are fraternities' overall goal being not just to raise money, but it is to foster a deep connection between Westminster college and the veteran community and being able to affect their lives on a physical level. Organizing these events requires months of preparation and being able to coordinate well with the people making the track chair and making sure that the fundraising platforms are set up well that way when we host the event it is able to bring the whole campus and the town of Fulton together.

One of the most moving moments during the whole event is when we are able to finally present the track chair to a veteran. Also being able to see firsthand the gratitude and the emotion on their faces reinforces why we came together to raise the money and why we commit ourselves year after year to make this dream a reality for these wounded veterans. It is also a really good memory reminder that philanthropy is more than just raising money it's more about restoring dignity freedom joy to those people who have given so much to us.

Overall, we try to make the track chair philanthropy event not just a fraternity event it’s more of a community mission. This is because Westminster helps us by offering facilities and professors encourage students to learn more about our mission and local businesses also contribute byOffering prizes and sponsorships to help fundraising efforts. The whole campus and community come alive with a lot of purpose for this initiative unified around a single goal giving back to those who have given so much

For the future, our fraternity’s goal is to continue to grow and make this tradition bigger. Hopefully, with more visibility and support the fraternity will be able to provide more than 1 chair every year. We believe that collaboration between students, faculty and other KAs we can deepen our impact, helping even more veterans enjoy basic daily activities that have been taken away from them while serving for our country. Everybody deserves help, and that’s what we stand for.

The season for the Bluejays has been nothing but exciting with new blood because of  incorporation of over 20 players combined with 25 returners. You can make a case that this will be a promising and electric baseball season. Following a record-breaking season in 2023 and an inconsistent 2024 season, the Bluejays entered this season with high hopes, excitement and their eyes set firmly in conference domination. 

Led by Head Coach Jake Jourdain, now in his 4th full season and 3rd as Head Coach, the Bluejays entered the 2025 season with unfinished business after falling short in the semifinals in 2023 and 2024. Last year’s squad saw the departure of 15 seniors, leaving the team with a young core led by players like Dereck Archer, Troy Romero, and Aden Pecka. The Blue Jays entered this 2025 season fueled with hunger and desire to get the job finished. 

As said by coach Jourdain: “This is a very complete team, we have a young and exciting core combined with our oldest players. This is also the most explosive team we’ve had in the past three years”, Jourdain said. He is also aiming high to break the school record for stolen bases in a single season as they have the weapons to do it. 

The season began with several non-conference games against teams like Hendrix College, Transylvania University, Millikin University, Loras College, and Washington University in St. Louis. This gave the Blue Jays the opportunity to compete against good competition before starting conference play against Greenville University. The beginning of conference games for the Blue Jays could not start any better after sweeping Greenville University and Principia College winning by playing good baseball overall. After starting conference play, the Blue Jays had challenging 6 games starting with the defending conference champions Spalding University then Webster University and Lyon College. During that stretch the baseball team went 1-5, getting swept by Spalding, Webster and splitting the series against Lyon. 

Half way through the season, the Blue Jays played against Blackburn College in a very exciting alumni weekend in which the team swept Blackburn. The Blue Jays also split a double header against Central College (IA) in another non-conference game and then came back to conference action against Eureka College in which the Blue Jays got swept by the Red Devils. Following the series against Eureka, the Blue Jays were looking to bounce back hoping to sweep the series against Fontbonne University but they ended up splitting the series. 

As the season is coming to an end, the Blue Jays have 4 more games remaining. They are going to play a non-conference midweek game against Monmouth and close the year against Mississippi University for Women on Saturday May 3rd. The Blue Jays have had a very inconsistent season but they have found the way to get the job done. We still haven’t seen the full potential of Blue Jay baseball, and with less than a week remaining we need to see the Blue Jays come together before heading into playoffs and get the conference championship that hasn’t been won since 2016.

In a powerful blend of service, style, and community, Westminster College’s Beta Theta Pi fraternity recently hosted a unique on-campus barbershop fundraiser that brought in $794 for the Super Sam Foundation, an organization committed to ending childhood cancer.

Held in the heart of Westminster’s campus, Beta Theta Pi, the event welcomed students, faculty, and local residents to come together. The fundraiser offered haircuts from barbers Tristan Smoot and Trey James, who volunteered their time and talent to ensure that every dollar raised would go directly to support the Super Sam Foundation’s mission.

“The atmosphere was electric,” said Trey James, who spent the afternoon giving dozens of haircuts. “Everyone was smiling, laughing, and genuinely excited to be part of something bigger than ourselves.”

The inspiration for the event came from Beta Theta Pi members who wanted to organize a fundraiser that felt approachable and engaging. “We talked about doing something a little different than the usual bake sales or donation drives,” said a member of the fraternity’s executive team. “The barbershop idea just clicked it gave people a reason to show up, support a great cause, and leave feeling good.”

The planning took weeks of coordination. Members reached out to barbers in the area, secured a central location on campus, and promoted the event across social media and through word of mouth. The buzz built quickly, and when the day came, the chairs began to fill.

“We were thrilled by the turnout,” said the fraternity’s Vice President of Education. “It was one of those days where you could feel the campus coming together. Everyone wanted to help.”

What made the event particularly special was the connection to the Super Sam Foundation. Founded in memory of Sam Santhuff, a young Missouri boy who bravely battled cancer, the foundation works to fund pediatric cancer research and support families facing a diagnosis. For the brothers of Beta Theta Pi, this cause struck a personal chord.

“We learned about Sam’s story, and it just hit home,” “It reminded us how fragile life is, especially for kids who don’t get to live out their full story. We wanted to honor that by doing something real, something that could make a difference.” Said the President of the Fraternity.

The money raised will help fund vital cancer research and provide direct support to families navigating the emotional and financial toll of pediatric cancer. According to the foundation, every dollar counts when it comes to advancing treatment options and raising awareness.

This barbershop event is just one example of Beta Theta Pi’s broader commitment to service and philanthropy. The fraternity has a long-standing tradition of giving back to both the Westminster and Fulton communities. From food drives to mental health awareness campaigns, Beta brothers consistently prioritize impact over image.

“We don’t do this for recognition,” said another fraternity member. “We do it because we believe it’s our responsibility. When you have the power to help someone else, why wouldn’t you?”

As music played in the background and conversations flowed around the barbers’ chairs, it became clear that this wasn’t just about fundraising. It was about connection between students, between campus and community, and between those who have the means to give and those who need support.

When the last haircut was done and the final dollar counted, the brothers of Beta Theta Pi had done more than raise funds they’d raised awareness, inspired generosity, and shown what’s possible when service meets creativity.

The fraternity hopes this is just the beginning. Plans are already underway to make the barbershop fundraiser an annual event, with the potential to expand its reach and impact even further

Summary: Over the past 2-3 years, The Westminster Mens wrestling team has had a number of accomplishments on the mat with some of their key athletes, The program has seen tremendous growth and succes. Their Team has displayed talent and determination by sending athletes to the national championships, setting school records and much more. Notable athletes like Micheal Roberts, Austen Wetzel, and Montgomery Mills have cemented their status in Westminster Wrestling History. These wrestlers dedication and constant hard work are apparent for these achievements, but so is the coaching staffs will to push their athletes, always seeking the best in their athletes, and their drive for greatness. The future is bright for the Wrestling program here at Westminster College, building a strong team dynamic and a foundation of young hungry athletes. The program is in a well positioned spot to maintain a dominant force on the national level for the next several years. We are confident that Westminster Wrestling will continue to grow, while theyre generating even more champions and making a long lasting impresion on the sport of wrestling, as we build on the momentum created by their recent successes.

The Westminster College Bluejays baseball team has had their fair share of ups and downs throughout this season. After an 0-3 start against Hendrix College and Millikin University, the Jays were able to salvage Game 2 of the Millikin series, giving them their first win of the year. The Bluejays carried this momentum into their next series, sweeping Loras College in a 3 game set.

Led by Head Coach Jake Jourdain, the Bluejays have had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows this season. "This is one of the most athletic teams this program has ever seen. We have the tools to win. All we need to do is come together." Jourdain stated. "I have a lot of faith in our guys." he added. The Bluejays, after graduating 15 seniors in 2024, are backed by returners Keli'i Price, Charlie Schweppe, and Troy Romero. Mixed in with plenty of new faces, the team has made strides this season. Troy Romero, so far, has broken the single season stolen base record, and the team as a whole has absolutely shattered the team record that was set roughly 30 years ago.

New faces have been a nice addition to the lineup. Braden Eye, Brett Montgomery, and Jack Page are stud freshman who have taken nicely to the college baseball world. Eye and Montgomery are top bats in the lineup, while Jack Page is lights out on the mound for the Bluejays.

The Bluejays have one more non-conference game against Monmouth College Wednesday, April 30th, before heading to Mississippi University for Women on May 3rd to finish conference play. Playoffs are set to begin May 6th and the Bluejays are ready to put it all together and potentially bring a conference championship back to Westminster.

With over 30% of freshman already leaving Westminster College.

Westminster College faced with a decline in student athlete retention. Increased academic pressures, and limited resources challenge the balance between athletics and academics. Despite improvement efforts many athletes are choosing to transfer, or leave the college completely. A steady decline of enrollment and retention is the opposite goal of new administrators, and coaches. Why is this happening here at our local college?

Over the last 4 years of being a current student I have seen the ups, and of course the downs of this college as a whole. Such as retention rates, athlete retention, and academics as a whole. Seeing Westminster under this stress makes me wonder what has happened for this new “trend” of leaving to occur. A few things I would consider would be in the internal issues amongst the school that students have raised as a concern.

In the spring of 2023, here at Westminster College our president had planned to do a zoom call with all current students in our lecture hall in the Coulter Science Center. During this meeting with over 100 students present, several issues were discussed and questioned why they weren’t being addressed. Our current president while not in the state at the time, had claimed these issues were being “handled and dealt with” and he appreciated our concern.

Our concern of student retention and lack of care about it was said to just be a “phase” at the time this was believed. Over my 4 years of being here I have seen and conducted interviews with current and non current student athletes. All having a relative answer, how certain resources weren’t provided towards their sport. Having to fun raise and take money out of our own pockets while paying for a 4 year private degree is a lot to ask of a new adult. With that being said I believe if our school doesn’t start providing more financial assistance towards sports, the 70% of student athletes on campus will be no more.

Fulton, MO – February 9th, 2025

On February 5th, 2025, the Blue Blazers rose far before the sun. Weary-eyed with determined hearts, twenty-four undergraduate students arrived at Lambert Airport at 4:30 am to make their journey to the Big Apple.

Since the inaugural trip in 2001, the Blue Blazers have traveled to New York City biannually to meet with some of the top financial institutions in the nation. The trip is currently led by alumni Brock Ayers ‘82 ΔΤΔ and Riley Zach ‘19 ΦΔΘ with visits from faculty, staff, and friends of the College.

Due to the legacy of the trip and the high caliber students who historically attend, the Blue Blazers have the opportunity to visit exclusive locations that are no longer available to the public.

“We had the unique opportunity to go to the New York Stock Exchange and walk on the trading floor. We also got to see firsthand the bell ring. I also had a chance to talk to one of the traders about their day to day lives and experiences,” elatedly shared Blue Blazers Investment Committee’s Chief Recruitment Officer, Allison Auer ‘27 ΚΑΘ.

The excitement didn’t end on the trading floor. The Blue Blazers also saw their name in lights! The College's and the committee’s logos were both proudly displayed in Times Square on the side of NASDAQ’s, one of the most-followed stock market indices, building.

The committee eagerly met with elite financial groups like Wells Fargo, Clearbridge, GQG Partners, Bloomberg, and JP Morgan during their time in the city. Various professionals discussed their career trajectories, day-to-day lives in their positions, and their advice for young professionals looking to emerge into the financial industry. To thank them for their time, the Blue Blazers gifted them a token of gratitude with a Westminster College twist.

“Something that the Blue Blazers have the opportunity to do is give a piece of the Berlin Wall and a Winston Churchill quote book to all of our amazing people that hosted us in New York at the different financial institutions. I think this makes us very well-known with these financial institutions and also gives them a little insight into what makes Westminster College so special,” boasted Chief Administration Officer, Ashley Wallner ‘26 ΚΑΘ.

While the emphasis on financial education is the pinnacle of the trip, the Blazers were also afforded the chance to have some classic New York experiences. They peered at the city from above on The Edge Observation Deck, and they adventured around some of New York's most notable historic sites on an enlightening tour.

Long days of conferences, excursions, and events certainly worked up an appetite! The Blue Blazers tasted the best of New York City. They had their first slice of authentic New York pizza at Angelo’s Coal Oven Pizza, and they devoured a five-course meal that just wouldn’t stop coming at Carmine’s Italian Restaurant! Over meals, the Blazers had a chance to build camaraderie with their peers while discussing all of the valuable lessons they had learned thus far.

On the final full day of the trip, the students were given a free day in the city to build their own itineraries. As a diverse group of students from a variety of different academic and extracurricular disciplines, the group chose vast experiences. Some paid their respects at the 9/11 Memorial while others opted to trapse around Central Park. Musically inclined students loved Wicked at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway, and the sports lovers were in awe of Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Knicks. From dancing with the dragon puppets across Chinatown to ice skating at the Rockefeller Center, the Blue Blazers didn’t leave a stone unturned.

The final night ended with a picturesque snowfall in Times Square. Having taken everything in, the group reluctantly got ready to pack up and head home to Fulton, Missouri - each of them filled with gratitude for the incredible experience they were afforded.

Chief Executive Officer Clement Mahoro ‘25 ΦΔΘ reflects, “On behalf of Blue Blazers Investment Committee, I want to extend gratitude to all the donors who helped make this trip possible. Thank you so much.”

The Blue Blazers, once again weary-eyed, found their way back to LaGuardia Airport on February 9th. Their once determined hearts were now filled with knowledge, satisfaction, and life-long memories as they caught their last glimpse of the city that never sleeps from the sky.

Finals week is almost upon the Westminster College campus, and students of every department know what that means. At best, you get that coveted 'A' you need for your GPA; at worst, you get to look forward to taking the class (and the final) all over again. And before that definitive end, however it leans, is the long weeks of studying, stressing, and looking forward to far-off summer. So how do students combat all of the weight on their shoulders during finals? 

Some students will take to one of two extremes: ignore it until it’s literally right on top of them, or begin studying weeks out in advance. For the first group, that means a mad dash at the finish line to cram in last-minute studying or complete essays in a day’s time. Possible to do, yes, but not great for your mental health or stress levels. 

Studying weeks in advance is fine, so long as you don’t get to the actual finals week and think “Oh, I’ve studied enough, I’ll totally remember this when I take the test,” only to forget because you haven’t touched the materials in days. 

To help prepare students for finals, the Reeves Library set up a bulletin board outside their front doors in Hazel Wing titled “Reeves Declassified Finals Survival Guide.” On the table in front of the board, they provided a few stacks of sticky notes and a notice encouraging people to share their tips and tricks for studying or words of advice for people to see. 

The board’s already been put to good use, with sticky notes stuck on to the board with phrases like “30 min naps help wake you back up!”, “Find ways to make studying enjoyable”, “Take time to relax! Stressing too much will ruin your health!” and “Smile, you’ve got this!!” with a smiley face drawn on. 

The bulletin board also provides other helpful information and tips, such as two “Advice from Alumni” papers. One says “You got this! Lots of studying to prep, plenty of sleep! The world awaits!” and the other says “Make a study schedule– first things first! Think next step not whole week.” 

There are also many useful posters on the board advising things like drinking water and making time to eat, finding partners to hold you accountable while studying, and a barcode to check out library services for free e-books and audiobooks. Additionally, there’s a flyer letting students know that the library staff is there to help if they have questions with writing or research help. 

Hopefully, as finals week begins, Westminster students can head into the fray knowing they've done all they can to prepare, and get their well-deserved passing grades to coast into summer break with no worries.

The Westminster Women’s Tennis Team is having a historic season and it all started with one incredible shift, growth. This spring 2025, the team has doubled in size, gaining five new players to a roster that was once barely able to compete. The inflow of new talent, several who have never played tennis before joining, not only inspired the team but also propelled Westminster into the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Conference Tournament for the first time in years. “Our overall team unity influenced the new players to join,” said Head Coach Samantha Pennington. “The women proudly wear their shirts, post on social media, and have an overall positive attitude. It’s known on campus as a great group of young players with potential.”

The new players, Ginna Meisenheimer, Amber Pratt, Bella Carter, Skyler English, and Laney Burks- have changed the program. Although all of them are beginners, they have shown tremendous progress. For example, Ginna Meisenheimer won both her doubles and singles match during her first ever competition. “It’s incredible how much they’ve improved,” said Westminster’s No. 1 singles player, Hayley Lale. “Playing a college sport without ever having played before is a huge challenge, but they are dedicated and want to be a part of our team.”

What makes this transformation so impressive is how the team has come together. Jada Barlow, a returning team member, says that the team unity is a strength to their growth. “I believe that the team dynamic is one major reason new members join our team,” Jada stated. “The positive energy and support along with the love of tennis is eye-catching. Once you start playing, you fall in love with it.” The returning players made it a priority to welcome the new girls, inviting them to practice together, sharing conversations on bus rides, and cheering them on from the sidelines. The men’s team has also stepped up to mentor and support the women, developing a cross-team bond that strengthens the Westminster tennis program. “The team’s culture is exceptional,” said Cooper Pennington, a leader on the men’s team. “Everyone on the team is competitive and a leader in their own way. The women this year have played exceptionally well. It has been amazing to see them get a conference win.” The win against Mississippi University for Women was a pivotal point for the women’s team. The victory marked an important milestone and served as a reminder of how much potential is within this young group. “We’ve posted more individual wins this season than in the past five years,” Coach Pennington said proudly.

The team is not stopping here for the future of Westminster Women’s Tennis looks more promising than ever. Most players are freshmen or new to the game, therefore their growth potential is enormous. “The ceiling is through the roof,” Cooper added. “These girls are outgoing, hardworking, and passionate. I think they’ll play a big role in recruiting for future seasons.” Coach Pennington agrees. “Next year, each player will have improved drastically before stepping on the court for the first match. The team is very dedicated to practicing in the offseason. The future looks bright.” With a strong sense of competitiveness, sportsmanship is a defining quality of the team. “They stand up for themselves on the court, and they support each other—what I love the most is their character,” Coach Pennington states.

The adventure into college tennis for the new players is more than just winning matches.  I love tennis! It has been about trying new things and pushing themselves. “I’ve learned that trying something new, even when you’re hesitant, is worth it,” Hayley said. “Most of them were nervous at first, but they kept playing and learning. That’s a lesson a lot of people can take with them.” Jada echoed, “Watching the newcomers go through basic training reminded me how important it is to focus on the fundamentals. Sometimes, going back to the basics is what really elevates your game.”

The 2025 spring tennis season has marked a new era for Westminster Women’s Tennis. This team was once a small, struggling roster and now it has blossomed into competitive, spirited team. Their development has not just been counted through wins but in their commitment, growth, and bonds they have formed. “This year has already been a big step in the right direction,” said Hayley. “I’m hoping more students on campus will see that and either come out and try it themselves—or come support us.” With a new foundation, a bench with emerging talent, and incomparable team unity, Westminster Women’s Tennis is serving notice and back on the road to the top.
