November 3 marks the separation of Panama from Colombia in 1903, after the Thousand Days War, which triggered its proclamation as the Republic of Panama. The proclamation of the Republic of Panama was the result of a nationalist process that had been destroying itself since the end of the 18th century and that ended with the separation of Panama and Colombia. The causes of the separation were several, since Colombia kept the Isthmus abandoned throughout the 19th century and caused frustration among Panamanians. Many expats may not know this, but Panama was a part of Colombia for eleven years, before the US helped leverage military support (1903), as part of the original negotiations for Canal rights. Currently, to celebrate this day, all Panamanians nationwide hold parades that include students and teachers to march on a route where they commemorate with national songs.

These are representative elements of a variety of historical events that define the birth of our country, formed as a Republic in 1903 when Panama achieved its separation from Colombia.

The National Flag: divided into four quarters, its beautiful tricolor (blue, red and white) forms the representative emblem before the world. The first flag of Panama was made by María Ossa de Amador.
