He didn't think it was safe to be around humans because they can be scared of giants. But in the end of the book he wasn't scared of humans. The BFG stood up and spoke to humans about the other giants. The Queen and everyone else helped save the humans from being eaten. At that moment they started calling him clever, kind, and smart.
