School bell rang! “It’s time to eat Tersheni” said Yasmin, a little girl with a small dimple. But Tersheni did not show a positive reaction. She seemed scared to go out of the class. “What is wrong Sheni?” Still no answer from Sheni. “Hey Sheni, today my mum cooked your favorite dish Nasi Lemak. Come on I know you are going to love it.” Suddenly Sheni smiled. Yasmin had been missing that smile since the bell rang. Deep down she knew that Sheni was going through something but she was not ready to tell her yet. “Okay how about we eat next to the fish pond today? It must be refreshing!” Finally the beautiful girl with russet brown skin said yes to her best friend. “Oh yes let us eat there, I can not wait to eat your food’. They enjoy the Nasi Lemak that Yasmin brought from home and later they ate some dessert that Sheni’s mum baked. After the recess time was over they headed back to their own classes since they were not in the same class.

Usually when the school time was over Sheni would come to Yasmin’s class and wait for her. Unfortunately, today she did not appear. Yasmin thought something must be going on with Sheni. Sheni had been her best friend since kindergarten. Whenever she was coping with a problem she would tend to keep it and never tell her. They had been friends in the cloud nine since the past few years. After that, she went to the bus stop and looked for her. There she was sitting at the very end of the bus stop. As she walked to her, she saw two boys coming to Sheni and said “Hey you dark girl do not talk to me, you cannot befriend us” while another boy said “She is different from us? Why ah?” Then they laughed and ran to somewhere else. Sheni looked very sad but as soon as Yasmin sat next to her she hid her sad fearful face. Starting from that day, Yasmin decided to protect her best friend no matter what.

The next day, Yasmin told Miss Izzati about what happened the day before. Miss Izzati called the two boys and asked them why were they showing a chip on their shoulder. They were scolded by Miss Izzati because it is not good to downgrade others because of their differences. She also told them that being rude to other people is not an ethical behavior. The next day, during recess time, the two boys come to Sheni and said their apologies to her. It had been a nature for Sheni to forgive people because she always had her heart in the right place. She even gave them some pastry that her mum baked. The boys really liked it .

Finally they made good friends together. Everyday Yasmin, Sheni and the two boys would enjoy their meals together. Sheni was very good in English so she would help them with their homework when they had free time. The boys always helped them with Mathematics since they mastered the subject. They were creme DE la creme of the school. Miss Izzati was very proud of them because despite all the differences, they united as one. Differences are not something that we can just accept but something to tolerate and celebrate as well.

I hope you are in the pink of health. I am writing to you about my School-Based Experience program which had been going from the 2nd until the 6th of March. I have gone to our primary school SK Taman Rakan. I had never been so nervous in my life until that day came. When I first set in my feet, I saw the buildings. I started to reminisce all the memories we held back then. I met the teachers that used to teach us. As we were busy growing up, they were also busy getting old. There was one time when I talked to Madam Rosmi who used to teach us English and she asked me to address her as ‘kak’ because I kept on calling her ‘teacher’. Well that was very awkward for me since she used to be our teacher but now she is my co-worker.

Dibah, I really miss you and Ming Ming. How I wish she was still alive. Being at the school for one week is not a piece of cake for me. Our memories haunted me in each corner of the school. I could feel her presence with me all the time. Remember that one time we used to read books at the library and Ming Ming would ask us what is “Ketupat”. She seemed very curious about it. Because of that, my mum taught us on how to make it. We would sit at the canteen and eat it on the next day. I restrained myself from going to the canteen but on my last day all the teachers had set up a small farewell party for me at the canteen. Unfortunately, I had to go.

All the teachers brought their dishes from home. For the first time in my life I tasted Chole which is a chickpea curry that Madam Rama cooked. She is such a good cook. Back then she had always been a fierce Science teacher at school, but never with us. You and Ming Ming would always be interested in the way she dressed herself. She would wear colorful beaded Sari everyday without fail. We even bought her Sari during Deepavali and she was very happy about it. Starting from that, she would wear it during special celebrations at school. I could not believe that she wore that dress again on my last day of SBE. Nothing much had changed with the Sari. It still looked good on her even though her face has gotten wrinkled, she still wore it pretty well. But overall I still enjoyed my stay there.

My brain still cannot digest how fast has time fled. 10 years have gone, but she is never gone from our hearts. How has such a beautiful soul gone too fast. The memories remain there. I know you are missing our Ming Ming. The day when she left us before the car accident was always the scariest moment for us to remember. Let us meet up soon Dibah. I really want to know about your trip to Italy. Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours truly,
Aqilah
