Summary (The Meekers of Redding)

It all started with a boy named Sam, and his unyielding desire to become a patriot. Sam and Eliphalet Meeker, father, conflicted over many things, but this was one battle the father would not win. In the end Sam did go off to fight the war, leaving behind his parents and his little brother Tim. Betsy Read, Sam's love, gave hints as to his return and often received letters. When he first returns his brother tries to sway him from the ways of the war. To no avail, awhile after Sam leaves once again their father dies in a British war ship by illness. This confuses Tim and he doesn't know who to side with in the war. His mother Susannah changes after her husbands untimely death. Sam once again returns, this time nothing more than skin and bones, much older, a man. He comes home for the first time in years, a group of hungry patriots try to steal his families cattle. He runs to their aid and tries to stop the occurrence, but by such actions he is captured and accused of such deeds himself. Tim attempts to save his brother from execution. Unfortunately, his execution was not about guilt or innocence, but about setting examples. Sam dies from execution by shotgun.

"My Brother Sam is Dead" is an overall really interesting book, once you get into it. I enjoyed how the characters were formed and their beings changes. It was cool to kind of see two different perspectives, and realize they were both pretty bad. I didn't really like all of the tragedy, but it's fine because that is what occurred. I liked how the death of Sam seemed so hidden in plain sight to me. I thought it would happen, but it continuously didn't occur so I thought perhaps the title meant figuratively, it was sort of sad. It was a good book. I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy an interesting plot, kind of twisted, and an upsetting end

1~Tim does not know whose side to be on in the war, the British or the Patriots, his father's or his brothers. Tim is confused by his feelings and how they led him to the hinges of violence. He wonders whether he would've shot his brother if he had the chance. Technically, he has a hard time to comprehend the war and seek his own thoughts on this situation based on the different perspectives and opinions of his father and brother.

2~Tim had conflicting thoughts about shooting his broth-rem. For a moment he contemplated his brother's demise, and him the suspect. Somehow though, Sam took their shotgun before he could silence his insanity. Leading them to be defenseless in the near future for upcoming occurrences. Though during the moment of the confrontation, Tim had tendencies if you will, to protect the fate he and his family will share. He failed miserably, resulting is Sam taking the weaponry for himself. When reading further upon the book, we encounter a situation in which cliche was used after the situation Tim had to abide by. This led to Tim to reflect on his past actions when he had the opportunity to save them this trouble they were currently experiencing.

External Conflict

1~ An external conflict was when Betsy and Tim got into a physical dispute. As Tim went to go deliver the message Mr. Heron had instructed him to do, Betsy had surprisingly appeared in Tim's journey. She had specific information that interested Tim about that message. Betsy's Hypothesis was that that message Tim had carried out for Mr. Heron was a spy report on Sam. Tim was outraged and refused to believe it. This concluded in a physical fight that TIm and Betsy had fought over the letter. Betsy had won, and as it turned out, the letter had nothing to do with Sam.

2~ Tim had gotten into several conflicts in the story, but this one would be about General Putnam. He had sentenced Sam to death because of the accusations that flew around from the actual thieves. Tim, knowing he was innocent and fought for Sam's justice, had been trying to get a hold of him for quite sometime. Finally, when he got the chance, he tried his best to convince The general. at first, he seemed to had already made up his mind. This was a conflict for Tim, having to try to persuade him into giving Sam's rights back, but he didn't seem to buy it. After some quite time of telling him what happened, The general had considered Sam's innocence. I believe maybe he had been bluffing just to get Tim out of his hair, because in the end, it didn't matter what had actually happened. But that he'd want to make an example to make the troops fear him for his own sake.

It refers to Tim's father's rugged breathing.

2) "...Idle hands make the Devil's work," (Susannah Meeker's words.) on page 42. This is an Idiom, it's basically saying that if you're lazy, you're bad.
